NJ’s fall bird migration is an amazing spectacle that runs through November. The eastern flyway follows the Atlantic coast and the Appalachian mountain range, giving Garden State residents a front-row seat as hundreds of species head south for the winter.

The Saddle Brook Green Team partnered with St. Philip Church on their Astronomy Event. Lonny Buinnis gave an excellent lecture on the celestial objects visible in the August night sky. After that, Steve Mariconda of the Saddle Brook Green Team gave a quick lecture on Light Pollution and how we can reduce it to see more stars and in the night sky and protect wildlife and human health.

After the lectures, we had a star party in the parking lot where we observed various stars, despite the haze, via telescope and long exposure camera.

Thank you to St Philip Church, Father Bruce, and Lonny Buinnis for hosting this Astronomy event!

Special thanks to Thomas Van Winkle for taking photos and Tyler Pozzi for taking videos that will soon appear on the Saddle Brook TV station.

Let's celebrate National Moth Week by helping moths thrive!

Artificial light at night can disrupt moth behavior, making it harder for them to navigate, feed, and reproduce. One of the easiest ways to support these important pollinators is by following DarkSky's Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting:

💡 Use light only if needed
🎯 Target light where it's needed
🔅 Keep lighting at the lowest effective level
⏰ Use controls like timers and motion sensors
🌙 Choose warmer-colored light whenever possible

Small changes to the way we light our homes and communities can make a big difference for moths, wildlife, and the night sky.
