The Sagamore Hills Township Police Department's Community Commitment is to serve and protect its more than 12,000 residents. Currently the community is patrolled twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. There are always two (2) to four (4) officers or Detectives working in the Township per shift. Under the leadership of Chief David Hayes, eighteen (18) police officers (two of which are

Detectives) provide a wide variety of police services. Assisting the Chief of Police with supervisory duties are an Assistant Chief, Administrative Lieutenant and a Patrol Sergeant. The Administrative Lieutenant is in charge of the Investigations Bureau and the Patrol Sergeant has command over the Patrol Division. The Assistant Chief is the daily Operations Commander. The Administrative Lieutenant works in "plain clothes" and dedicates all time to case work in the Investigations unit and attends Investigator meetings within the county. The patrol Sergeant is also a member of the Metro SWAT team. Aside from patrol and investigative services, the police department provides assistance in a number of other areas such as resident vacation checks, child safety seat installation/inspection (with two certified officers), a Police Explorer program, juvenile diversionary program, community policing and free fingerprinting for residents. Officers on all shifts distribute Patrolled your Area Cards (PAC) which is a highly successful program ensuring residents that officers are patrolling their neighborhoods. For assistance with child seat installation or inspection, call to set up an appointment with either Officer Tim Ellis or Officer Dan DeCrane. Both are certified installers/inspectors of child restraint systems and will be happy to help you. They attend yearly training updates for this certification. Last evening, a terrible tragedy took place in the Rittman community. This incident claimed the life of a Rittman police officer, left 3 additional officers wounded (including a K9), and countless families forever changed.

Sagamore Hills Police Department stands with our Rittman brothers and sisters during this difficult time, and prays for a speedy recovery for the wounded officers.

Today, we proudly celebrate Independence Day and commemorate America's 250th year—honoring the courage, sacrifice, and vision of those who declared our nation's independence in 1776.

As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy, let us also remember and thank the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, first responders, and all those who have served our country and communities with honor.

Whether you're attending a parade, hosting a backyard barbecue, or enjoying fireworks, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely. Please drive responsibly, never drive impaired, keep a close eye on children around fireworks, and be considerate of veterans, pets, and neighbors who may be sensitive to loud noises.

From all of us at the Sagamore Hills Police Department, we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable Independence Day.

⚠️ Storm Update – Road Closure & Power Outages ⚠️

Due to the severe storm that moved through Sagamore Hills, please be aware of the following:

🚦 Valley View Road & Dunham Road Intersection
The traffic signal at the intersection of Valley View Road and Dunham Road is without power. Please treat this intersection as a 3-way stop and proceed with caution.

🚧 Willow Lake Entrance- Now Open, utility pole will be replaced when a crew becomes available.

The Willow Lake entrance was closed due to downed power lines blocking the roadway. FirstEnergy has been notified and is aware of the situation. Because of the high volume of storm-related calls throughout the area, there is currently no estimated time for repairs. Macedonia Dispatch will continue to contact FirstEnergy every hour for updates.

💡 Power Outages
If your neighborhood remains without power, please know that the Sagamore Hills Police Department and Macedonia Dispatch are maintaining regular communication with FirstEnergy and will continue working to obtain updates and assist in restoring service as quickly as possible.

We appreciate everyone's patience. Please avoid downed power lines, never assume they are safe, and report emergencies by calling 911.

Today, officers from the Sagamore Hills Police Department had the pleasure of visiting the children at Northfield Presbyterian Church Daycare for a fun and educational community outreach event!

The highlight of the visit was K9 Annie, who quickly became a favorite among the children. Our officers introduced Annie, explained her important role in law enforcement, and answered plenty of great questions from the curious young audience.

The children also had the opportunity to get an up-close look at one of our police vehicles, explore its equipment, and learn about the tools officers use to help keep our community safe.

Building positive relationships with our youngest community members is an important part of what we do, and we are grateful to Northfield Presbyterian Church Daycare for inviting us to spend part of our day with them.

Thank you for the warm welcome! We hope everyone had as much fun as we did meeting future officers, K9 handlers, and community leaders!

E-Bike Regulations in Ohio – Know Before You Ride!

As the popularity of electric bicycles continues to grow, the Sagamore Hills Police Department would like to remind riders and parents about Ohio's E-Bike laws to help keep everyone safe on our roadways and trails.

Ohio law recognizes three classes of electric bicycles:

🔹 Class 1 E-Bike • Pedal-assist only • Motor assists only while pedaling • Assistance stops at 20 MPH
🔹 Class 2 E-Bike • Equipped with a throttle • Motor can provide assistance without pedaling • Assistance stops at 20 MPH
🔹 Class 3 E-Bike • Pedal-assist only • Assistance stops at 28 MPH • Rider must be at least 16 years old • Helmet required for both operators and passengers

Where Can E-Bikes Be Operated?

✅ Public roadways (except limited-access highways and interstates)

✅ Class 1 and Class 2 E-Bikes are generally permitted on bike lanes, side paths, and shared-use paths unless restricted by local ordinance.

⚠️ Class 3 E-Bikes are generally prohibited on shared-use paths that are not adjacent to a roadway unless specifically authorized.

❌ E-Bikes should not be ridden on trails primarily intended for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, or other natural-surface recreational trails unless specifically permitted.
Sidewalk Use

Ohio law allows bicycles and E-Bikes on sidewalks when the motor is not engaged, although local municipalities may adopt more restrictive regulations.

Important Safety Reminders:

🪖 Helmets are strongly recommended for all riders and are required by law for Class 3 riders and passengers.

🚦 E-Bike operators must obey traffic laws just like traditional bicyclists.

💡 When riding at night, E-Bikes must be equipped with proper lights and reflectors as required by Ohio law.

📖 Ohio Revised Code 4511.522 – Electric Bicycles
Defines permitted use of Class 1, 2, and 3 E-Bikes
Establishes age and helmet requirements
Addresses where E-Bikes may be operated and associated penalties for violations.

Defines Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bicycles.

📖 Ohio Revised Code 4511.52 & 4511.55
Applies bicycle traffic laws to E-Bikes and outlines roadway operating requirements.
