โ€œSmoke alarms are important because they can be one of the first indicators to get out of a house thatโ€™s on fire. Priority number one is your safety: we want you to get out of the house. That smoke alarm is going to let you know if something's going wrong in your house, especially if you're sleeping, long before you realize it. It's going to give you a bigger window of opportunity to get out and be safe. Along with that, the sooner you can get out and call 911, the sooner we can show up and possibly mitigate the situation before it becomes more devastating.

You need a smoke alarm in your home with fresh batteries. If you are unable to install them on your own, we partner with the Red Cross to do smoke alarm installs. We can put up to three in each house.

We try to keep them out of the kitchens or outside of the bathroom because it's really easy to have burning food and showers set those off. What happens is the alarms go off, people take the battery out, and the battery ends up not going back in. Good places would be front rooms, down in the basement, where people sleep, and the main hallway. They're going to pick up the smoke at the right time, but they're not gonna be going off every time you leave.โ€

"I was hired at the Saginaw Fire Department in 2016 and served as a firefighter for about five years. I was a driver for a couple years, and most recently, I was a lieutenant out of Station Two. From there, I moved to my current position as Community Engagement Coordinator. It was a great opportunity that I couldn't pass up.

Like most of us, I became a firefighter because I wanted to help people. I had some good role models in high school and I thought it was something I'd be good at. Along with EMS sometimes being part of the job, firefighting seemed like an awesome thing to do.

As Community Engagement Coordinator, Iโ€™m helping the community of Saginaw in a different way. Itโ€™s a way to give back, and I love working with kids. I get to go into school and work with the kids, work on drug-free initiatives, and try to give them coping skills and ways to deal with stressors and the things they run into in life. We do the Botvin Life Skills Program with middle schoolers as of right now, and we're looking to branch out into both the elementary and the high schools.

I'm also the liaison between internal and external organizations. For example, I help with getting fire trucks out at community events.

While we fight fires, fires are usually someoneโ€™s worst day and we donโ€™t want them to start in the first place. Our fire prevention initiatives, like working with our smoke alarms and fire education in schools, the fire calls have dropped significantly over the last 10 years."
