On Friday, our sophomore class spent the morning at SVSU's Ryder Center for a hands-on career exploration event. Intended to introduce students to many of today's in-demand occupations available in our area, our students experienced many hands-on activities in the career sectors of Healthcare, Agribusiness, Information Technology, Construction, and Advanced Manufacturing.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

With the help of an artificial intelligence co-writer we have tried to recapture the essence of what the speech given at the dedication of Swan Valley High School in January of 1973 might have sounded like. Here is what we found:

โ€œA keynote address titled "The Challenge of Education in the 1970s" delivered in January 1973โ€”just as Swan Valley High School opened its doorsโ€”would have captured a unique turning point in American history. The early 1970s were marked by dramatic societal shifts: the tail end of the Vietnam War, civil rights expansion, rapid technological change, economic uncertainty (stagflation), and a growing generation gap. Addresses at the time were dominated by five real-world debates:

The "Career Education" Push: In 1971, U.S. Commissioner of Education Sidney P. Marland launched a nationwide campaign for "Career Education"โ€”emphasizing that high schools needed to prepare students both for college and vocational/technical trades, rather than treating non-college students as an afterthought.

Rapid Social & Demographic Shifts: Schools were adapting to Title IX (passed in June 1972, revolutionizing women's sports and education), desegregation efforts across Michigan, and changing youth culture following the late-1960s counterculture movement.

The Arrival of New Technology: In 1973, handheld electronic calculators (like the HP-35 and Texas Instruments SR-10) were just entering high schools, sparking fierce debate among math teachers over whether calculators were "cheating" or the future of learning.

Accountability & "Back to Basics": The early '70s saw a conservative pushback against 1960s "open classroom" experimental teaching methods, with parents demanding a renewed focus on fundamental reading, writing, and mathematics standards.โ€

Reflecting back fifty-three years, have a conversation with your grandparents or other elders about the thoughts and memories from the early 1970โ€™s.
