Meet Your Saginaw FD Firefighters: Firefighter/Paramedic Windham! 🚒
Firefighter/Paramedic Windham has been with the Saginaw Fire Department for about two and a half years, after previously working for the Krum Fire Department for just over five years.
Windham says as a firefighter, "we’re more of the hands-on part of the team. On calls, we’re responsible for things like fire suppression, search and rescue, patient care, and whatever else the situation requires. Around the station, we train, maintain equipment, and make sure everything is ready to go. Our officers are responsible for leading the crew and making decisions on scene, and our apparatus operators are responsible for getting us there safely and operating the trucks and pumps."
When asked what inspired him to become a firefighter, Windham shared "I knew I wanted to do something in public safety. When I started looking into firefighting, I fell in love with pretty much everything about the job right away."
In regards to whether becoming a firefighter or paramedic was harder, Windham said becoming a paramedic was “a whole different level” because of the amount of information required and the ability to apply it appropriately.
Windham enjoys that the job provides a good mix of firefighting and medical calls. One of the most rewarding parts is being able to help someone “when they’re having one of the worst days of their life.” He also enjoys the camaraderie, adrenaline, problem-solving, and never knowing what each shift will bring.
Outside of calls, Windham says firefighters train, maintain their trucks and equipment, clean the station, work out, conduct inspections, and handle other department duties. Outside of work, Windham spends most of his time with his family, while also working part-time jobs and staying busy with projects.
Windham’s safety message to the public: “Take your feet off the dashboard when you’re riding in a car. Your teeth will thank you.”
