Thanks to Saint Albans Public Works for trimming and removing low hanging branches from Highland Dr.! The branches were right at windshield height on the fire trucks, and could have caused a major issue! Public Works does not get the attention they deserve. Most of their work goes unnoticed! We appreciate all you guys do!! City of St. Albans, WV

🎒🔥 BACK TO SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY! 🔥🏫

As students across West Virginia prepare to head back to the classroom, the Fire Marshals Association of West Virginia reminds families, educators, and school staff that fire safety should be part of everyone's back-to-school routine.

🏠 FIRE SAFETY STARTS AT HOME

Back-to-school schedules can make mornings and evenings busy, but a few simple habits can help keep your family safe:

🔥 Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and test them regularly.

🚪 Have a home fire escape plan and make sure children know two ways out when possible.

📍 Pick a safe meeting place outside where everyone knows to gather during an emergency.

🍳 Never leave cooking unattended, especially during busy mornings or after-school meal preparation.

🔌 Avoid overloading electrical outlets, power strips, and extension cords.

🔋 Use the proper chargers for phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and other rechargeable devices. Never charge devices on beds, couches, or other combustible surfaces.

🔥 Teach children that matches, lighters, and fire are tools for adults, not toys.

🏫 PRACTICE FIRE SAFETY AT SCHOOL

🚨 Take every fire alarm seriously and evacuate immediately when instructed.

🚶 Know and follow your classroom's designated evacuation route.

🚪 Keep classroom exits, corridors, and evacuation paths clear at all times.

📦 Never allow decorations, furniture, classroom projects, or stored materials to block doors or exit pathways.

🔌 Use electrical equipment safely and report damaged cords, outlets, or other electrical hazards.

🧯 Keep fire extinguishers, alarm pull stations, electrical panels, and other fire protection equipment visible and accessible.

👩‍🏫 Teachers and staff should review emergency procedures with students and make sure everyone knows what to do during a fire drill or actual emergency.

🔥 FIRE DRILLS MATTER!

Fire drills give students and staff an opportunity to practice how they will respond during a real emergency. Take every drill seriously, stay calm, follow instructions, exit quickly and safely, and remain at the designated assembly area until instructed otherwise.

📣 HELP US SPREAD THE MESSAGE!

We encourage everyone to share this post with your family, friends, schools, teachers, fire departments, and communities. A simple share can help put important fire safety information in front of more West Virginians as our students return to school.

Together, we can help make this school year a safe and successful one for students, educators, school employees, and families across the Mountain State! ❤️💛💙

During the past Yakfest our water rescue personnel saved many lives while ensuring the safety of kayakers after a recent rain made for higher than normal water levels and turbulent portions of the river threatened many folks. This past Monday city council recognized the hard work from our dedicated staff. What most people don’t see if the countless hours of training that goes into ensuring our professional staff is prepared for instances just like these!

B-shift found an unexpected victim in need of help in the bay during daily truck check. The hummingbird made its way into the fire-station. It was taken upstairs where it was fed sugar water and cared for. Despite initial hope for a positive outcome, unfortunately it died. Even though the outcome wasn’t positive, things like this is what makes the men at SAFD so unique. These men can go from a burning house, cutting someone out of a car, to gently trying to save a humming bird.
