From fake investment opportunities and government imposter schemes to AI-generated phone calls and fraudulent social media advertisements, online scams are becoming more sophisticated and costing New Yorkers billions of dollars each year.

In a recent op-ed published by amNewYork, State Senator Leroy Comrie and Assemblymember Clyde Vanel highlighted the growing threat these scams pose to consumers and the need for stronger safeguards to hold social media companies accountable. New Yorkers now lose an estimated $6.5 billion annually to online scams, many of which originate on social media platforms where scammers use targeted advertising to exploit vulnerable users.

That is why Senator Comrie and Assemblymember Vanel are advancing the Fraudulent Social Media Advertising Prevention Act (S.8605/A.11066), legislation that would require social media companies to verify advertisers, strengthen fraud prevention measures and do more to protect consumers from scam content.

Thank you to the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), advocates and impacted New Yorkers who continue to raise awareness about the devastating impact of online fraud.

Black music has always been more than a soundtrack. It has been a voice for change, a source of healing, and a powerful expression of culture, creativity and resilience.

I was honored to join this year’s Black Music Month Celebration recognizing an extraordinary group of artists, broadcasters, and cultural leaders whose work continues to inspire generations. Congratulations to MC Lyte, Talib Kweli, DJ Beverly Bond, Bob Law, Michelle Coltrane, Sheila L. Brown, Andre Langston and the family of jazz legend John Coltrane.

Their contributions remind us that Black music is not only a reflection of our history, but a force that continues to shape our future. As we celebrate Black Music Month, we also celebrate the storytellers, innovators and trailblazers whose voices continue to move our communities forward.
