Leroy Comrie was elected to represent the 27th Council District in 2001 and was re-elected in 2005 and 2009. He grew up in Southeast Queens, attending P.S. 116, I.S. 8, and Jamaica High. He is a lifelong member of Saint Alban the Martyr Episcopal Church, where he serves as a layperson, vestryman, and chalice administrator. Therefore, he is focused everyday on providing quality education, guidance, and support for youth; ensuring quality healthcare and services for seniors; and creating economic development projects that generate employment opportunities and affordable housing for local residents. Then-Councilman Comrie served as the Deputy Majority Leader and chairman of the Queens Delegation. He also served on key committees, including the Budget Negotiating Team, Land Use, Rules, Privileges and Elections, Finance, Consumer Affairs, Housing and Buildings, and Cultural Affairs/Libraries. In 2014, Leroy Comrie was elected to serve in the New York State Senate from the 14th District. During his first term in the state legislature, Senator Comrie and other Democrats raised the minimum wage, lowered income taxes for middle class families, and implemented paid family leave. As a New York State legislator representing many of the neighborhoods that comprise Southeast Queens, he is committed to working to keep our community safe, improving our schools, and supporting local businesses and families.
