Coal River Group Barnette Conservation Preserve The Barnette Conservation Preserve is a 30-acre tract of land located along Strawberry Road near St. Albans. The family of Curtis Hank Barnette, a native of St.

Albans, donated the land from the family's original homestead to protect the historic site along the Lower Falls of Coal River. The Coal River Group maintains the site with the support of the Hank Barnette family. The Coal River Group has built two walking trails on the Preserve, a lower trail through the wetlands and an upper trail up the hillside to a summit of 958 feet.
