Pattonville's connection to the Blue Angels goes back nearly 30 years.

During the Blue Angels' 1998 visit to St. Louis, Pattonville teacher Deborah Hauser took flight with the team. Hauser taught English language arts and American history at Pattonville High School and POSITIVE School from 1975 until her retirement in 2002. She was named Pattonville High School Teacher of the Year in 2000 and was recognized as an Outstanding Newspapers in Education Teacher of the Year in 1998.

Her children, Jessica Wynn and Scott Hauser, now carry on the family tradition as educators in Pattonville. Wynn teaches English language arts at Pattonville High School, while Hauser teaches English language arts at POSITIVE School.

As science teacher Amy Schwendemann and Pattonville alum Chase Kohler recently took to the skies with the Blue Angels, this 1998 KMOV segment offers a look back at another memorable Pattonville connection.

Pattonville High School science teacher Amy Schwendemann took flight with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels after being selected as a Blue Angels Key Influencer, a program that recognizes individuals who make a lasting impact on youth in their communities.

Schwendemann, who has taught at Pattonville for 24 years, spent approximately 45 minutes in the cockpit of an F/A-18 Super Hornet, experiencing the same maneuvers performed during the Blue Angels air show. As a teacher of Applied Science and Technology, Earth Science, Astronomy and Space Science, she said the experience reinforced lessons she shares with students about trying new things and stepping outside their comfort zones.

The day also featured another Pattonville connection with 2011 Pattonville High School graduate Chase Kohler, who now works in flight test communications and public affairs for the United States Air Force. He participated in a Blue Angels flight and helped promote this weekend’s Spirit Of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo.

Watch as Schwendemann reflects on the flight, former students share the impact she had on their lives, and Kohler highlights the opportunities awaiting visitors at this weekend’s air show and STEM Expo.
