Today crews had the chance to stop by a lemonade stand at 31st and Silver, and we can confirm — it’s worth the stop! 🍋

These young entrepreneurs are out working hard, serving up cold lemonade and big smiles on a warm day. If you’re out and about in the area, swing by and help support them. Small community moments like this are what make our neighborhoods great.

We always enjoy opportunities to connect with the community, especially when lemonade is involved. 🚒

You may have seen us out at the elementary schools this week! Over the past several days, we spent time with 3rd graders in the Safety House, teaching important home fire safety lessons. Students learned valuable safety tips and even practiced what to do if a smoke alarm goes off in their home.

This is also a great reminder for families to talk about fire safety at home:

• Make sure you have working smoke alarms
• Sleep with bedroom doors closed
• Know your family’s outdoor meeting place

These are important safety habits that are now fresh in the minds of our 3rd graders — and hopefully yours too!

A special thank you to our friends at Spring Lake Park, Blaine, Mounds View Fire Dept. for borrowing us their safety house!

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to meet with lawmakers to discuss key priorities that impact not only firefighters across the state, but also the communities we serve. Opportunities like this are critical to ensuring our voices are heard.

Our discussions focused on protecting funding for essential fire training and education, addressing concerns over proposed legislation that could negatively impact safety in multifamily buildings, and other important issues affecting our communities.

We are grateful to our representatives for taking the time to meet with us, listen, and engage in these important conversations.

This week was a big one for fire prevention and community outreach!

On Tuesday, we visited two senior living communities to talk about fall prevention and simple steps residents can take to reduce their risk of injury.

Wednesday brought us to the 2nd graders at St. Charles, where we focused on the importance of home escape plans. Students are now working with their families to create one of their own—taking safety home!

We wrapped up the week on Thursday at St. Anthony High School, talking with students about what a career in fire and EMS looks like and answering their questions about the job.

We’re proud to connect with our community at every stage of life—prevention starts with education.

At approximately 1430 today, the St. Anthony Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a grass fire near Starbucks in St. Anthony. Crews arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread further.

During the investigation, a cigarette was located in the area of origin. With current dry conditions, fires can start and spread very easily. We want to remind everyone to properly and safely dispose of all smoking materials in an appropriate location.

A special thank you to Officer Rushton from the St. Anthony Police Department for using his squad’s fire extinguisher to help slow the fire’s growth prior to our arrival—sir, you’re our hero. tyfys 🚒 🔥

Please keep our brothers and sisters at the Columbia Heights Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers.

Many of us had the honor of working alongside Captain Cuzzupe over the years and witnessed firsthand his dedication to the job, professionalism, and commitment to others. He was not only an outstanding firefighter, but an even better friend.

Our hearts go out to Tony’s family and friends, the Columbia Heights Fire Department and all who knew him.

Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.

It is with deep sadness that I share the unexpected passing of Fire Captain Anthony “Tony” Cuzzupe on April 17, 2026.
Tony began his service with our department as a Reserve Firefighter on June 17, 2002, where he earned his Firefighter and EMT certifications. He was appointed to the Paid-On-Call Division on July 1, 2003, and hired as a full-time firefighter on September 13, 2005. Tony was promoted to Fire Captain on October 27, 2016.
I had the privilege of working alongside Tony for several years when I was a Fire Captain. In the fire service, people often talk about brotherhood, but it is difficult to fully understand unless you have lived it. It goes beyond trust on the fireground. It is built over countless 24-hour shifts, shared challenges, and a level of connection that stays with you for life.
Tony was not only a trusted colleague, but a close friend. He was one of the most competent and compassionate firefighter/EMTs I have had the honor to work with.
Throughout his career, Tony made a lasting impact on our department, the fire service, and the thousands of people he served in our community. His presence in the firehouse and on the job will be deeply missed.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Tony’s family, friends, coworkers, and all who knew him.

— Fire Chief Daniel O’Brien

Great job to New Brighton Department of Public Safety and thank you to KARE 11 for the highlight on the recent youth-involved fires in our area. We work closely with our neighboring communities because no matter what patch is on our shoulder, the mission is the same: keeping people safe.

That mission starts with education. From preschool through high school, we spend time in our schools teaching fire safety and helping build habits that can last a lifetime. Prevention and early education remain some of the most important tools we have.

We also know some youth and families may benefit from additional fire safety education or intervention, and we are always ready to help.

As always, contact us if you need more information.

The New Brighton Fire Department and other local agencies are offering free educational programs aimed at fire prevention.

At approximately 2300 on Saturday night, crews responded to a fire at Silver Point Park. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the fire had been intentionally set, with possible juvenile involvement. The individuals reportedly left the area in a blue sedan.

This serves as an important reminder to speak with youth about the dangers and serious consequences of playing with fire. While we were fortunate that no one was injured and no significant property damage occurred, the seriousness of this incident remains a concern.

The St. Anthony Fire Department offers a youth firesetter prevention and intervention program focused on education and prevention for youth involved in fire-related incidents. If you are aware of a juvenile who may be involved in this type of activity or could benefit from additional support and education, please reach out to us.

Additionally, we are aware of similar youth-involved fires that occurred this weekend in New Brighton Department of Public Safety. We are in close contact with our neighboring agencies, and while at this time we do not believe these fires are related, we will continue to investigate as new information becomes available.

Team USA isn’t the only one bringing home medals! 🇺🇸🥇

The St. Anthony Fire Department competed in the celebrity round of the pinewood derby today with a mini version of our beloved Engine 1. Not only did it win over hearts, but it also earned us some hardware of our own.

Great racing by Captain Basara, Firefighter/EMT Hunter, and Firefighter/Medic Vang! 🚒
