I need to tell you about a group of families nobody is counting.
When a veteran dies by su***de, the grief is immediate. The bills don't wait. The kids still need breakfast. And the VA paperwork arrives before the funeral flowers have wilted.
These mothers — raising children alone, denied the benefits their husbands earned, fighting a bureaucratic appeals process that takes an average of FIVE AND A HALF YEARS — don't exist in any federal database as their own category.
They have no name. No dedicated study. No income data. Nothing.
The median single mom earns $41,000 a year.
A mom with 3 kids needs $71,000 just to cover basics.
The gap between those two numbers? That's where these families are living.
I've spent years working with Once A Soldier, an organization founded in 2017 to support veteran families after su***de loss. We focus on the moms. We focus on the kids. Because they are the ones still here — and they need us.
We're naming this population: Fractured Veteran Families.
Not because they're broken beyond repair. But because a fracture — left untreated — becomes something that changes a family forever.
If this moves you, please share this post. And if you can support the mission, even a small donation changes the daily reality for a mom who is holding everything together with nothing left in the tank.

These families served this country too. It's time we acted like it.
Veteran Su***de Survivor Families are forgotten in the USA. Denied benefits, long review times, the VA wants them to just go away.
