🦟 CSI: Mosquito Edition 🦟

When two of our Sentinel Chickens tested positive for West Nile Virus, our team immediately went to work.

AMCD staff investigated the area, searched for mosquito breeding sites, and collected mosquitoes for laboratory testing. During the investigation, they discovered a hidden breeding site that will be eliminated to help reduce future mosquito populations.

The mosquitoes collected in the field are identified, tested for West Nile Virus, and used to help us track virus activity in our community. This information helps us target mosquito control efforts where they are needed most and better protect public health.

Science in the field. Science in the lab. Protecting our community every day.

🦟 National Mosquito Control Awareness Week is coming up soon! 🦟

Did you know? Mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in as little as 7–10 days, and some species need only a bottle cap of water to breed.

Take a few minutes this week to help reduce mosquito populations around your home:

πŸ’§ Empty standing water
πŸͺ£ Check buckets, plant saucers, tarps, and toys
🏑 Inspect gutters and other water-holding containers

No Water. No Mosquitoes.

🦟 Mosquito Control Fogging– June 10, 2026 🦟

Due to increased salt marsh mosquito activity resulting from recent environmental conditions, the Anastasia Mosquito Control District (AMCD) will be conducting truck-mounted adult mosquito control (fogging) operations in the following treatment routes on Wednesday, June 10, 2026:

πŸ“ Route 12911
πŸ“ Route 4485

⏰ Treatment Hours: 9:00 PM – 6:00 AM

Salt marsh mosquitoes can emerge in large numbers following tidal flooding and are capable of dispersing several miles from their breeding sites, creating nuisance conditions in surrounding communities. These treatments are being conducted to reduce adult mosquito populations and improve quality of life for residents.

Residents may see AMCD spray trucks operating during overnight hours. All products are applied according to label requirements and industry best management practices.

πŸ”¬πŸ¦Ÿ Behind the scenes of our Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) program!
In this video, you'll see how we separate male and female mosquito pupae using an automated pupal separator. Since male pupae are smaller than females, they can be sorted by size with remarkable accuracy.
Why does this matter? Only male mosquitoes are used in SIT. After sterilization, they are released to mate with wild females. The resulting eggs do not hatch, helping reduce future mosquito populations.
It's science in actionβ€”and one of the many ways we're working to protect St. Johns County from mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases.

🦟 June 3 is Insect Repellent Awareness Day! 🦟

As we spend more time outdoors during the warmer months, don't forget to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites. Applying an EPA-registered insect repellent before outdoor activities is a simple and effective way to help prevent bites and reduce the risk of mosquito- and tick-borne diseases.

Not sure which repellent is right for you? Use the EPA's search tool to find a product that fits your needs:
