Eat Well and Do Good for COA in September! Council on Aging is excited to announce our participation again this year in the Columbia Restaurant’s Community Harvest program. Throughout the month of September, diners can support COA simply by dining at any of the locations of the 1905 Family of Restaurants, including the Columbia Restaurant at 98 St. George Street in downtown St. Augustine, Florida.

Now in the 29th year, the company’s month-long Community Harvest program donates 5 percent of all diners’ checks to charities selected by the guests. Restaurant guests choose a charity from ballots provided with their checks. The restaurant calculates the 5 percent donation and provides the non-profit with gift certificates that can be used at any of the restaurants for up to 12 months. There is no additional cost to the guest.

"We are grateful to the Columbia Restaurant for this generous tradition and applaud their continued commitment to the communities they serve," said Michelle Braun, Executive Director, St. Johns County Council on Aging. "We are honored to participate again in this year's Community Harvest program."

For reservations at the Columbia Restaurant, visit their website at www.columbiarestaurant.com or call (904) 824-3341.

For information on all of the 1905 Family of Restaurants participating in Community Harvest, please visit https://www.1905familyofrestaurants.com/.

You can make a difference! Volunteers just like you share their time and talents and change lives here at COA. Here are our current volunteer needs:

Friendly Caller–Looking for a volunteer who will make Friendly Calls. Some seniors are isolated and would like a volunteer who will call them on the telephone for a friendly visit. You can do this volunteer opportunity from your own home and the day of the week and time is flexible. This will make a difference in the life of a senior!

IMEP (Anastasia)–Our Memory Center at the Anastasia campus needs volunteers on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 12:30pm and Wednesdays & Thursdays 9:30am to 12:30pm (consistent/ongoing/weekly). This is an urgent need.

Sunshine Center (Adult Day Care Activity Assistant) – Assist staff with group activities such as reading, assistance with games, crafts, chair exercise, serving lunch and cleaning tables. The volunteer acts as an extra set of hands and eyes to assist a group of wonderful participants who have developed memory loss and some confusion. Days and times of opportunity: Mondays & Fridays (one or both days; full or half days available) @ 9:30am-1pm & 1pm-4pm.

Sunshine Center (Videographer) – Videographer needed to film musician (guitar player) and singer during a 1 hour and 15 min. musical entertainment session in our Adult Day Care setting. Video will be used again in their absence for participants to sing along with and enjoy. We have two different guitarists that perform (one on Wednesdays and one on Fridays). Please reach out to us if you have experience in this field and have a Wednesday or Friday available. This is a one-time opportunity.

Cutters & Clippers–Our Care Connection program is looking for interested volunteers to assist in basic lawn care and maintenance on Thursdays 8am-12pm. This kind of service helps local seniors remain in their own homes where they are most comfortable, rather than being compelled to enter assisted living for lack of assistance.

We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to fill your free time while helping others and making a difference in their lives! To download a volunteer application, please visit our website at www.coasjc.org/volunteer. For more information or to schedule your interview, please contact COA's Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] or (904) 209-3686.
