The focus of Saint Augustine Public Montessori School is to provide an authentic Montessori experience, and the public nature of the school will allow the Montessori Method of education to be available to anyone. SAPMS will strive for high levels of student independence, intrinsic motivation, engagement in the learning process, academic growth, self-confidence, and a lifelong love of learning with
in the context of the Montessori educational philosophy. We prioritize diversity and reverence for the interconnectedness of all life and the environment, and the school will strive for a balance among its students, including age, sex, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic diversity. The goals for SAPMS include, but are not limited to:
β’ Creation of a Prepared Environment that incorporates hands-on, concrete educational materials in a specified, orderly arrangement where the children can develop their unique capabilities and discover their full potential by allowing the children to direct their learning time and pace under the guidance of the teacher; and
β’ Promotion of independence, responsibility and leadership as well as respect, cooperation, and community in a classroom spanning three grade levels. We anticipate a starting enrollment of around 50 students, gradually growing to about 150 students over several years, to serve students in grades 1-6. The main contact person for the proposed school is Jean McDowell, who can be reached at the above email, address or phone number. By providing a public Montessori option, SAPMS will help meet the demand for Montessori education in St. Johns County and enhance the educational opportunities within the St. Johns County School District.
