The history of St. Augustine is marked by resilience in the face of destruction. In 1586, the city was famously attacked and burned during Sir Francis Drake’s raid, leaving much of the early wooden settlement in ruins. Over time, additional raids and accidental fires caused further damage, but each time the community rebuilt and strengthened the city, shaping it into the enduring historic landmark it remains today.

Alongside the blacksmith, a young apprentice known as a bellows boy would operate the bellows throughout the day, keeping a steady flow of air to maintain the intense heat needed for the craft.
