Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) are land animals, not sea turtles. They aren't great swimmers. However, tortoises occasionally enter shallow ocean water! While scientists aren't entirely sure, the tortoises may be trying to cool off or remove ticks and other parasites.

If you spot one along the shoreline, admire it from a distance! Never handle or move it, as gopher tortoises are protected. It is illegal to harass or relocate them in Florida.
