! Known as the narrowest street in St. Augustine, Treasury Street runs perpendicular between St. George Street and Avenida Menendez (once Bay Street). Treasury Street has long been a stop for visitors, who often see if they can touch both sides of the small alley.

⛪ ABCs of St. Augustine Architecture: N is for Nave ⛪

Religious architecture is a part of St. Augustine's heritage. Today, we're visiting a few of our "Ancient City"'s Catholic churches to show some variations of a church nave.

The coat of arms that hangs above the entrance of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument has long fascinated visitors – it is even featured in a 1873 short story in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine. As you can see, Meyer even went so far as to transcribe and translate the inscription.

Sourced from the UFHSA Governor’s House Library collections, this illustration is but a small sample of E. A. Meyer’s work. The St. Augustine Historical Society holds the full collection of the Meyer family’s illustrations and photographs.

Another Monday, another illustration from Ernest A. Meyer. This illustration of Charlotte Street looks north from old Baya alley.

Ernest A. Meyer was a New Yorker who seemingly became entranced by St. Augustine’s historic charm after living there as a young man in the early 1880s.

This illustration is from the UFHSA Governor’s House Library collections. The Meyer Collection at the St. Augustine Historical Society can tell you more about the artist and his family.

In 1940 and 1946, E. A. Meyer published books that included pen and ink drawings of various St. Augustine scenes – mostly from photographs taken in the 1800s.

This image is from the UFHSA Governor’s House Library collections. The full Meyer Collection (which includes the family’s glass plate negatives) is held at the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library – only yards away from where this original photo was taken!

🧑‍🍳ABCs of St. Augustine Architecture: K is for Kitchen 🧑‍🍳

Today's installment of your favorite local history series shapes two very different examples of Spanish Colonial kitchens from two of St. Augustine's Spanish Periods. (There are many more examples of historic kitchens throughout our "Ancient City".)

1) The Gallegos House was reconstructed by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board (HSAPB) in 1963 to exhibit the First Spanish Period (1565-1763).
2) The Salcedo House was reconstructed by the HSAPB in 1965 to exhibit the Second Spanish Period (1784-1821).

Today marks the beginning of a mini-series we’ve decided to call wherein we’ll share a weekly illustration from the hand of Ernest A. Meyer (1864-1949). A native to New York, Meyer’s family wintered in St. Augustine in the late 1870s before moving here from 1882 to 1884. Those years left a lasting impression!

Check back in the coming weeks for more beautiful illustrations like this one from the UFHSA Governor’s House Library collections. Also check out the St. Augustine Historical Society’s Meyer Collection, which holds photographs and drawings from E.A. Meyer and his family.
