** UPDATE **

Following further investigation, deputies have confirmed that the individuals who fled are no longer being actively searched for, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

We appreciate the community’s vigilance and thank all first responders for their quick actions and continued support as this investigation moves forward.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office personnel conducted a traffic stop near mile marker 5075 on I‑90 in Gilberts, Illinois. Several individuals were taken into custody at the scene while two additional male subjects fled on foot: one heading northbound and one southbound.

Deputies remain actively searching the area with support from drones, K9 teams, and additional law enforcement resources. There is no immediate threat to the public, but residents and motorists may notice increased police activity.

Please avoid the area if possible and report any suspicious activity to authorities. We are actively working to obtain and release descriptions of the three individuals who fled so the public can stay informed

Following a domestic battery investigation in Virgil Township, a barricaded subject incident on I.C. Trail prompted a response from the Kane County Sheriff's Office SWAT and Negotiation Response Teams. The subject was taken into custody without injury after several hours of negotiations.

Authorities subsequently recovered a fi***rm, am******on, suspected illegal fi***rm conversion devices, and a large quantity of suspected cannabis from the residence. Multiple felony charges have been approved, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The Big Rock Fire Department has advised the Kane County Sheriff's Office that a fire training exercise is taking place in the 7S100 block of Mary Drive, just south of U.S. Route Route 30 today. The training will involve personnel from the Big Rock Fire Department and the Kaneville Fire Department.

We were just made aware of this scheduled training activity due to the increased 911 calls we had been recieving. Residents in the area may notice emergency vehicles, firefighters, and training-related operations.

This is a planned exercise and not an emergency incident.

The Geneva Police Department announced that downtown street closures and parking restrictions will be implemented to accommodate the Festival of the Vine.

The festival runs from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 11-13, on both sides of the historic Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St. The Flavor Fare/Entertainment stage will be situated on James Street, while the Arts & Crafts show will occur on Campbell Street.

🚨 POLICE ACTIVITY - ROAD CLOSED

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is currently responding to the 47W500 block of IC Trail, near the intersection of IC Trail and Meredith Road in Virgil, for an individual who is barricaded inside a residence and reportedly brandishing a fi***rm. There are no reported injuries at this time.

The area is temporarily closed until further notice. For your safety, please avoid the area and use alternate routes to allow first responders to safely manage the scene and conduct their investigation.

Residents in the immediate area have been advised by responding deputies to remain in place for your safety. Kane County Emergency Management is also on scene, assisting with traffic control.

*Traffic Stop Leads to Enforcement Action & Continued Narcotics Investigation*

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 27, 2026

Kane County Sheriff’s Office Large Narcotics Investigation & Arrest

Kane County, IL - The Kane County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit conducted traffic enforcement on Interstate 88 in Aurora Township. During a traffic detail, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 Freightliner semi-truck with a Texas license plate that was traveling eastbound on Interstate 88 near Illinois Route 31.

During the traffic stop, deputies developed information that led to the discovery of 330 pounds of co***ne, located under the sleeper compartment of the truck. As a result of the investigation, one individual was taken into custody.

The individual has been identified as:

- Ketema, Yonas, a forty-six-year-old male, residing in the 5800 block of Ashbrook in Houston, Texas.

He has been charged with the following:

1. 720 ILCS 570/401.1(a) Controlled Substance Trafficking (Class X)
2. 720 ILCS 570/401(A)(2)(D) Unlawful Poss. of Controlled Substance w/ Intent to Deliver (Class X)

Following the initial traffic stop and subsequent findings by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Chicago Financial Crimes Task Force (operating under the auspices of Homeland Security Task Force) was notified and is assisting in the ongoing narcotics investigation.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to proactive enforcement efforts that identify criminal activity occurring within and traveling through Kane County.

The charges against Ketema are not proof of guilt. He is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This particular area will be temporarily closed as crews work to safely remove the vehicles and conduct their investigation.
