Today was a tough one! We said goodbye to one of our Future Marines who was taken too soon! Had a bright future ahead of him and had his sights set on becoming a Marine!

When your a figure of inspiration, hope, and new beginnings as Marine Corps Recruiters on Recruiting Duty are to civilians in society, it is hard to lose someone when you aren’t supposed to. The past few days has been new territory to navigate through for my Marines and myself!

My team and I had the honor of being a part of his funeral detail as pallbearers and we also presented the Flag to his parents! He was sent off the right way, with honor and dignity!

Meet Captain Lara Soto.

Capt. Soto served four years in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) prior to transitioning to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). While attending an IRR muster, she learned about the unique opportunities that the Marine Forces Reserve Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) program provides.

When she's not in uniform, Capt. Soto is a small business owner in the civilian sector. In the IMA program, she can be a Marine with a greater degree of flexibility.

On November 21, 2022, Capt. Kelsey M. Hastings made history when she became the first woman to lead the elite Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon as platoon commander.

When asked how she feels about being the first woman in this position, Hastings said, "At the end of the day, I just I feel honored to be a potential role model for both men and women who want to be a Marine. I wouldn't necessarily say I take that title as a big honor. Yes, I am the first, but at the same time, I'm team commander and I've done this before. So, I want to do my best for my Marines and the mission. It's an honor, but it's not the reason that I'm here. It's not the reason I'm leading. I want to lead Marines and be selfless in that regard."

These educators from the Chicagoland area had the opportunity to learn about the Marine Corps and what we provide their students after they graduate high school! They got an all expense paid trip to San Diego, CA and a behind the scenes look at how Marines made!!

These educators are now able to educate their students about the Marines, the benefits that come with being a Marine, and the successful professional development that those young men and women are able to possess having become a Marine!!
