Campton Township Parks & Open Space Tranquil natural areas, rural roads and large open spaces, farms, and their place in local history.

Though Campton Township had some active recreational facilities during the mid-1990s, the familiar rolling hills, farms and pastoral views of Campton Township had quickly begun to yield to a sea of subdivisions. To residents concerned with this fast pace of development, a plan to protect the Townshipโ€™s open lands was an immediate need. A grass roots group of Township residents began looking at how best to protect a way of life and the beautiful contours of the landscape before it was forever altered. Thus began the protection of the land that makes up Campton Township Parks & Open Space. Since then Campton Township has protected nearly 1500 acres of public land, including restored natural areas, parks and playgrounds, and historic sites.

Itโ€™s National Nut Day! From oaks and hickories to black walnuts, many of our native trees are busy producing nuts this time of year. Take a walk through the woodlands at our parks, and you'll likely spot acorns, hickories, and walnuts scattered along the forest floor.

These trees do more than add beauty to our landscapes. Their nuts provide important food for wildlife, including squirrels, chipmunks, deer, and many bird species. Rich in healthy fats and easy to store, nuts help animals build energy reserves and prepare for the challenges of winter.

If youโ€™re interested in becoming part of our volunteer prescribed burn crew, contact [email protected] for more information.

Prescribed burn season is approaching quickly and will be here before we know it. During burn season, some parks may experience temporary closures on burn days to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors. Please watch our social media pages for updates on burn activities and notifications about park closures.

Why do mushrooms get good internet?
Because they're always connected to the right network!

Beneath our feet, fungi form vast underground networks of thread-like structures called mycelium that help connect ecosystems and recycle nutrients.
Here are a few mushrooms we spotted doing their decomposer duties in our parks. Happy National Mushroom Day!

Remember: mushrooms play an important role in natural ecosystems. Please leave them undisturbed and do not harvest or consume any mushrooms found in our parks.

This past week, our natural resource team planted plugs to increase diversity in our wetland. They planted over 2000 plants of 41 different species. These plugs were made possible by the Campton Township Open Space Foundation and their funding from the Clean Energy Award Grant. Keep an eye out for some new things blooming at Poynor Park next year!
