Day 1 Mickel Begg 2026 8-4-2026

Chief Walt Lewis- Managing the Mayday

Likely the worst possible situation a crew, department and especially an incident commander can incur, is having a mayday or multiple maydays. When they occur, incident commanders must be prepared for the shift in priorities while engaging a multitude of options relevant to the situation at hand, so that all efforts that can be employed to seek the best possible outcome. Personnel need to be trained, equipped and prepared for the event to occur without notice. The varied causes of a mayday incident dictate the actions necessary to respond with the appropriate resources, in tactical priority, with control and coordination.

This program is designed to cover the foundations and individuality of the various types of maydays, how to recognize when one may unfold through vigilance, mechanisms to prevent their occurrence and tactics to employ to manage the situations, the stressors that come with them and the courses of action afterwards.

On 8/5/2026 Members of the Irmo Fire District will honor the memory of Firefighter Michael “J” Muller at this year’s Mickel-Begg event.

J. tragically lost his life on May 26, 2023, while operating at a mutual aid structure fire. During this special presentation, members of the Irmo Fire District—including Dylan Williams, Andrew Morris, Nick Macken, Captain Dominick Boyce, and Chief Mike Sonefeld, with potential participation from Ryan Kenney and Richard Gross—will share their experiences from that day and reflect on the events that unfolded.

More importantly, they will speak about who Michael “J” Muller truly was: a dedicated firefighter, a valued brother in the fire service, and a remarkable person whose legacy continues to inspire those who knew and served alongside him.

Happy International Women’s Day

Osceola FD Benevolent would like to take a moment today to say something that isn’t said often.

To every woman who has ever walked into a firehouse, put on an SCBA, climbed a ladder, or served her community in any way — we honor you today. Especially those right here at Osceola County Fire Rescue, Kissimmee Fire Department, and Saint Cloud Fire Rescue.

To the women in our fire departments and in fire service families everywhere — you are special.

To every woman serving in a fire department across Central Florida, around the Country and around the world — whether you’re on the engine, on the rescue, behind the dispatch board, in administration, in fire prevention, or supporting your department in the countless ways that too often go unrecognized — thank you.

We also want to honor our wives, mothers, daughters, and partners of firefighters — you hold families together through long shifts, missed holidays, and the quiet weight of worry that comes with loving someone who runs toward danger. We couldn’t do any of this without you.

And finally, to every woman across our community serving in EMS, law enforcement, nursing, education, the military, and every career where your presence makes a difference — we see you too.

From the Osceola FD Benevolent — thank you.
