Check out this incredible piece of local history! Our curators tracked down this St. Croix Falls newspaper using the Minnesota Historical Society’s free, digital newspaper hub. It’s a massive special issue printed to celebrate the arrival of the railroad that built our community.

So happy to partner with Dove Healthcare on this outreach project! Our “moving museum” project was first thought up for our school age kids at SCF schools, but come to find out the “ older kids” enjoyed it just as much!!! 💙💙

Today we remember Deputy Mike Seversen, a man whose courage, resilience, and unwavering spirit left a lasting mark on Polk County and far beyond.

In 1991, while assisting Burnett County, Deputy Seversen and Burnett County Deputy Allen Albee confronted an armed suspect who had already been involved in a shooting in Minnesota. The suspect opened fire, killing Deputy Albee and striking Deputy Seversen in the spine. Though the injuries left Mike a quadriplegic, he survived — and he lived the rest of his life with extraordinary strength, faith, and purpose.

Mike relied on his faith, family, and friends to navigate the most difficult of circumstances. His positive attitude inspired everyone who met him. He became a remarkable ambassador for law enforcement, always encouraging others to pursue careers in public service. His legacy continues through the Mike Seversen Scholarship Fund, which supports future generations in his honor.

The statue at the front entrance of the Justice Center — a project Mike championed — stands as a permanent tribute to law enforcement in Polk County. A bench at the overlook in St. Croix Falls also bears his name, a reminder of the deep connection Mike and his family had with the community.

Despite his injury, Mike never allowed limitations to define him. He remained active, visible, and engaged. He was a steadfast supporter of first responders, nurses, and public safety professionals. His presence lifted others, and his outlook reminded us all what true resilience looks like.

Deputy Seversen’s legacy is one of service, courage, and hope. We honor him today and every day.

Deputy Mike Seversen, End of Watch April 14th, 2014.
