Poem by John McCrae
"In Flanders Fields" is a famous World War I poem by Canadian soldier and doctor John McCrae, written in 1915 after burying a friend, which uses the imagery of poppies growing on graves to urge the living to continue the fight, establishing the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. The poem's powerful message of sacrifice and duty made it a motivational tool, leading to the poppy's adoption as an international symbol for fallen soldiers.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. It is also considered to be the unofficial beginning of summer.
