Did you know Audubon State Historic Site has three ponds located within the park? Each pond has its own unique character, and they vary in depth, with the deepest reaching nearly 9 feet.

These waters are home to a variety of fish, including bass, catfish, and yellow perch, along with a lively mix of wildlife such as peeper frogs and American bullfrogs. You may also spot red-eared slider turtles basking along the banks—and if you’re lucky, even a snapping turtle moving quietly through the shallows.

When you visit, we invite you to take a moment to sit by the ponds and simply observe. It’s a peaceful way to experience the natural life that thrives throughout the site.

They may look cute and cuddly, but please remember that all animals in the park are wild animals and should never be approached or touched. This includes raccoons, cats, deer, birds, and any other wildlife you may encounter during your visit.

For the safety of both our visitors and the animals, please admire them from a distance and avoid feeding or attempting to pet them. Wild animals can become stressed around people and may react unpredictably, even if they seem friendly.

One of the best parts of visiting the park is seeing wildlife behaving naturally in its own habitat. Help us keep them wild and safe for future visitors to enjoy!

On May 1, 1803, the United States and France agreed to the terms of the Louisiana Purchase in Paris. This massive land deal—finalized later that month—doubled the size of the young nation and permanently shaped Louisiana’s future, bringing it under American control while preserving its rich French and Spanish cultural roots.
It is currently on display Old State Capitol Museum in Baton Rouge as part of a special exhibit.
It’s part of the exhibit “Bought for A Song: A Young Nation Expands.”
The document is on loan from the National Archives and will be on display through July 11, 2026.

Ever wonder what Oakley house looks like late at night or early in the morning, Our Campground host took these wonderful pics on a stroll around the grounds. The place has a certain feel to it when the parks closed.
