Parashant National Monument is located immediately north of Grand Canyon National Park and the Colorado River and east of the state of Nevada. Its beauty consists of a vast, wild landscape of desert cactus and sheer canyon walls, soaring raptors and tall ponderosa pines, isolated cattle corrals and line shacks, and rugged rock formations set against endless blue skies.

Are you interested in working for the National Park Service? Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is hiring Seasonal Maintenance Worker positions!

Typical seasonal dates are from April to October. While the monument itself is in northern Arizona, the duty station for these positions is St. George, Utah. These positions will be open until Monday, October 26, or until 500 applications have been submitted.

Visitor Services Assistants will help Parashant staff provide general information, preventative search and rescue tips, participate in site monitoring and resource protection, and more!

Beginning at 12:01 am on Tuesday, September 8, fire restrictions at Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument have been lifted.
Please remember to practice fire safety year-round, even when restrictions are lifted.

Always drown, stir, feel, and repeat until campfires are completely cool. Keep a fire extinguisher in your vehicle, and on hand when conducting potentially hazardous work such as welding or plasma cutting. Always properly extinguish and dispose of ci******es.

Calling all young adventurers! We’re celebrating curiosity, discovery, and the joy of exploring your public lands!

Through the Every Kid Outdoors Act, all 4th grade students can receive a free America the Beautiful Pass! This pass is your ticket to a year of unforgettable experiences on federal public lands.

Get your pass by visiting everykidoutdoors.gov. Print out your voucher and bring it to any place that sells America the Beautiful passes. Fourth grade families can also bring a printed voucher to the Grand Canyon-Parashant booth at Peach Days on September 5, and we’ll exchange it for a pass right on site! Fourth graders must be present.

Start your adventures early, often, and outdoors. We'll see you there!

What happens when you give two curious, outdoorsy interns the opportunity to explore one of the most remote corners of the American Southwest?

You get a season full of discoveries, dust, data collection, and a whole lot of learning!

For Staff Saturday, we’re spotlighting Sedina Stoddard and Greg Mitchell, who joined Grand Canyon-Parashant this summer through Southern Utah University’s Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative (IIC). Sedina and Greg dove head-first into their internships; bat monitoring by night, navigating monsoon storms by day, and picking up new skills from one another along the way. They found joy in the landscape, tackled challenges with grit, and became an essential part of our summer crew.

We’re grateful to have worked alongside them, and we’re wishing them each well on their next adventure!

Happy birthday to the National Park Service!

Today marks 110 years of protecting and preserving America’s treasures. The National Park Service was established on August 25, 1916, to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.”

Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is a prime example of a landscape ‘unimpaired’. It’s considered one of the most remote locations in the lower 48 United States. The lack of development here offers endless opportunities for solitude, exploration, and multi-use recreation.

As we celebrate 110 years of stewardship, we’re grateful to be part of a system that protects places as rugged and extraordinary as Parashant. Here’s to another century of caring for America’s story, one monumental visitor experience at a time!

Stand on any ridge in Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and you’re watching America move. Not in miles per hour, but in millimeters per year. The ground beneath your feet is slowly stretching apart, reshaping the landscape in real time.

Parashant sits at the meeting point of two remarkable regions, the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin. The forces that built these landscapes are still at work today, quietly shaping the scenery.

Much of this story begins with plate tectonics. Off the West Coast, oceanic plates dive beneath North America, creating pressure that slowly spreads and thins the crust. This process, called crustal extension, is what gives the Great Basin region its broad valleys and long north‑south mountain ranges.

Here at Parashant, only about 18 miles of crust separate you from Earth’s molten mantle, a good reminder that the land is always changing. Even if we can’t see it happen, the story of this place is still being written, one millimeter at a time.

National Park Week reminds us to care for wild places. Safety Sunday reminds us to care for ourselves in them, especially during monsoon season.

Monsoon weather is still making an impact on the Arizona Strip. High winds, heavy downpours, and flooding can change your day in an instant. Here are some important safety tips for planning your next adventure.

Check the weather before you go. For specific information on remote areas, use the National Weather Service website. Type in the specific area you’re hoping to visit. You may be surprised at how many locations on the monument have their own weather forecasting!

Turn around, don’t drown! Never enter a flooded road, trail or wash. As little as two inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the road. It is always safer to turn around in hazardous conditions than risk forging ahead.
