As children head back to school, we enter the busiest time of the year at the Amani Center. With students returning to the classroom after summer break, they reconnect with teachers, counselors, coaches, and other trusted adults. This often leads to an increase in reports, referrals, and disclosures of abuse as children are interacting again with a broad range of adults.

When those children come to Center, they are welcomed into a safe, trauma-informed environment specifically created to provide peace and support when they need it most. Through our child-led forensic interview process, children tell their story once, and only once. We are honored to listen with care, and to witness their incredible courage as they use their voices to tell their stories.

The journey of recovery from abuse starts the moment a child walks through our doors, and through intervention, advocacy, and ongoing support, children and families can begin healing and moving toward a brighter future. Recovery is possible because of the combined efforts of Children's Advocacy Centers, supportive families, and compassionate community members who walk alongside children every step of the way.

You can help child abuse victims reach brighter futures with your support: https://amanicenter.org/get-involved/

As families get ready for the busy back-to-school season, we have a few quick tips to make the shift from summer vacation to regular school day routines run more smoothly:

😴 Re-establish Bedtime – Start transitioning back to normal bedtime schedules. An evening routine including things like a calm story time may help kids to relax at the end of the day.

📵 Reduce Screen Time – Start decreasing screen time as summer vacation winds down, especially the hour before bedtime.

💬 Communicate – Talk with your kids about the new school year -their friends, teachers, or anything they may feel nervous about. Talking things over can help calm back-to-school jitters!

📓 Get Organized – Help your child gather school supplies, pack their backpack, discuss the school morning routine, or review plans for afterschool activities/sports. Getting things prepared together can help your child feel ready for the school year to begin.

💙 Find Support – As a parent, engaging in your favorite activities or spending quality time with friends, family, or a partner can help reduce stress. It’s important to prioritize your own wellbeing so that you can show up with patience, positivity and peace.

Families can find support during the back-to-school rush, or at any time of year, by visiting our Family Resource Center. The Family Resource Center provides food, toiletries, school supplies, washer/dryer access, and assistance navigating systems to connect with needed resources, with bilingual services in Spanish and English.
