Séliš-Ql̓ispé Culture Committee This page is designed to inform the community about SQCC projects and events.

The Séliš-Ql̓ispé Culture Committee was first created in 1974-75 in response to the urgent concern of many traditional elders that we needed to take strong action to ensure that our culture would be carried on by the younger generations, and by the generations yet to come. Since that time, we have worked hard in many areas to ensure that both our language and way of life will always survive and

flourish. ACTIVITIES:
-Traditional tribal cultural events and activities
-Annual Bitterroot Dig & Feast
-Salish Language Classes
-History & Culture Archives, Photographic -Archives, and Historical Collections Management
-Tribal History and Ethno geography Projects
-Consultation / advising federal, state, and local governments
-Bi-annual visits to Medicine Tree
-Recording elders' oral histories and cultural knowledge
-Cultural orientation for Tribal and non-Tribal departments and programs.
-Public educational outreach and presentations.
-Development of Language and Cultural Learning Resources and Materials
-Gathering of Traditional Plants & Foods

Last week, CSKT staff honored the implementation of Cultural Waterways Ordinance 113‑A, a law passed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes that designates the Lower Flathead River as the first Cultural Waterway on the Flathead Reservation.

In the words of the ordinance, “Water is sacred. It is the current that runs through all of life, and through the cultures of the Séliš, Ql̓ispé, and Ksanka people.”

In 2022, the CSKT Tribal Council passed the Cultural Waterways Ordinance, the result of hard work behind the scenes by SQCC, KCC, CSKT Legal Dept., NRD Dept., and CSKT staff members.
On Wednesday, the Selis Qlispe Culture Committee staff & members, Kootenai Culture Committee staff & members, CSKT NRD staff, and CSKT Legal staff, floated the river to reconnect and honor our sacred waters and the land, also to celebrate the protection under the ordinance.
