ST JAMES RESIDENTS - If you are hearing the outdoor sirens sound - it is just a TEST. The recent storm and weather week determined the siren near Don's Tire was not operating correctly. They are working on the siren and will be testing it to ensure operation. There is no action required by the residents of St James. This is only a test.

🚨 New Minnesota School Bus Safety Law 🚨

Minnesota has updated its school bus safety law to address dangerous “near-miss” incidents.

What’s changed:
Drivers must now stop at least 20 feet away as soon as a school bus’s red lights start flashing — not when the stop arm is fully extended.

🚫 No more trying to “beat the bus.”

Penalties:
• Failure to stop is a misdemeanor
• Minimum fine of $500

Let’s work together to keep our kids safe.

Sanciones:
• No detenerse es un delito menor
• Multa mínima de $500

Trabajemos juntos para mantener a nuestros niños seguros.

Outdoor Siren FAQS-

Q- I cannot hear the siren when in my house.
A- The sirens are designed to alert outdoor residents and visitors that there is a threat in the area. The sirens encourage you to "GO INSIDE AND SEEK INFORMATION" from a reliable source. Not all city residents will hear the sirens inside their home or work.

Q- I did not hear the siren go off in my neighborhood.
A- Although the sirens are tested monthly, there may be instances in which a fault occurs. Although this is not ideal, it is probable. Keep in mind sirens are part of a redundant warning system that allows for multiple ways of warning. If you believe the siren in your area is not working, please let your local police or emergency management office know right away. We will check it out.

Q- The sirens went off, but the threat was in a different town.
A- In Watonwan County, when there is a TORNDADO WARNING issued anywhere in our county, the sirens will activate throughout the county. By doing this, it allows ALL of our residents to know that a threat is in our area and attempts to give all of Watonwan's residents and visitors the most amount of time to prepare - or let someone you know in the area affected to TAKE ACTION. With this information, you can seek additional information to guage what action, if any, you feel is necessary to take for your safety.

Thank you for your attention to this post. Please read the picture for the conditions in which the siren is most likely to be activated. Please also understand, we reserve the right to use the siren for any imminent threat. Do not just think of these as a 'tornado siren' as they may be used in any instance in which someone outside should go inside to seek safety information due to a life safety threat.

If there are any questions, please call the Watonwan County Emergency Management Office at 507-375-5841.
