As EMS Week begins, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank the EMTs and Paramedics who go above and beyond every single day.

You've seen them responding to emergencies, rain or shine—but behind the scenes, they’re training alongside fire departments, transporting patients to and from hospitals near & far, fine-tuning their skills, and supporting one another in ways the public rarely sees. Their commitment never takes a break, even when the week of recognition ends.

One week is simply not long enough to show our gratitude.

Today, we’re celebrating our four-legged Deputy, K-9 Maya, who turns 7 years old! 🎉🐾

Maya is a valued and highly trained member of our team, working alongside her handler, K-9 Deputy Jalyn Woratschka, to help keep Watonwan County safe.

This past fall, Deputy Woratschka and K-9 Maya successfully completed narcotics detection training through the United States Police Canine Association, earning their official certification. Maya is certified in the detection of illegal narcotics such as methamphetamine, co***ne, he**in, crack co***ne, and fentanyl.

In addition to her narcotics work, Maya is also trained in tracking non-violent offenders, runaways, missing children, and vulnerable or at-risk adults—playing an important role in critical search and recovery efforts throughout our community.

Maya’s Likes:
• National Night Out and other interactive community events
• Practicing her skills during downtime
• A game of fetch with her favorite ball or stick after a job well done
• Visiting her friends at St. James Vet Clinic who ensure she’s in tip top shape

Maya’s Dislikes:
• Days off—she’d rather be working!
• Bath-time isn’t her favorite
• Illegal narcotics in our community
• Being mistaken for a German Shepard (Maya is a Dutch Shepard X Belgian Malinois)

From routine calls to time-sensitive searches, K-9 Maya is always ready to work and brings focus, energy, and a positive presence to every assignment to help keep our community safe.

On Armed Forces Day, we honor the men and women serving across all branches of the United States military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard—especially those currently on active duty here and abroad. We also want to extend our appreciation to those in the National Guard and Reserves, who are ready to serve, no matter the mission or the moment.

From all of us at the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our gratitude to those who serve and to the families who support them.
