🚨 TEXT 911 — WHEN IT'S NOT SAFE TO CALL! 📱

Sometimes making a phone call could put you or someone else in greater danger. That's why Text-to-911 is an important public safety option available in Watonwan County.

☎️ CALL IF YOU CAN. TEXT IF YOU CAN'T.

Calling 911 is ALWAYS the preferred method of contacting emergency services when it is safe and possible to do so. Speaking directly with a 911 dispatcher allows emergency personnel to gather critical information more quickly, ask important questions, and coordinate the help you need.

However, there are situations when speaking out loud simply isn't safe or possible.

When should you TEXT 911?

🔹 When you're hiding from someone who may harm you and speaking could reveal your location.

🔹 During a domestic violence situation when making a phone call could put you in danger.

🔹 During an active threat or other emergency when remaining silent is critical.

🔹 If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and texting is your best way to communicate.

📱 HOW TO TEXT 911:

Open your phone's text messaging app.

Enter 911 as the recipient.

Include your exact location and describe your emergency.

Send your message and remain available to answer questions from the dispatcher.

Remember: Text messages may take longer than a voice conversation, and dispatchers need accurate information to send help. Keep your messages clear, avoid abbreviations, and follow the dispatcher's instructions.

WATONWAN COUNTY OFFICE CLOSURE NOTICE
Monday, October 12, 2026
Watonwan County will have brief office closures on Monday to allow our employees to participate in important safety training.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the public’s understanding as we take time to train and prepare our employees to help maintain a safe environment for our staff and the public.
Human Services Building
Closed Monday morning.
Offices will open at 12:30 PM and remain open for the rest of the business day.
Courthouse & Resource Center
Offices will be open Monday morning.
Offices will close at 2:00 PM for the remainder of the day.
Both buildings will reopen Tuesday morning for normal business hours.
Please plan accordingly if you need to conduct business with Watonwan County on Monday, October 12.

🚜 Peak Harvest Season 2026 is quickly approaching 🌽

MnDOT reminds motorists to watch for slow-moving farm equipment on Minnesota roads during harvest season.

From 2023–2025, 392 crashes involving farm equipment resulted in 12 deaths and 167 injuries across Minnesota.

Motorists:
• Slow down and use extra caution, especially on rural roads
• Watch for wide turns, blind spots, debris, and deer!
• Keep headlights on
• Pass only when it’s safe

Farm equipment operators:
• Use required lights and slow-moving vehicle emblems
• Make equipment as visible as possible
• Check vehicle and load height before traveling
