Rock Lake Conservation District

Rock Lake Conservation District RLCD works with farmers, landowners and communities to implement conservation on the Palouse.

Rock Lake Conservation District offers opportunities that benefit landowners, producers, and the environment through voluntary incentive-based conservation programs. The Palouse Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) helps farmers maximize efficiency, improve soil health and water quality, and build wildlife habitat in conjunction with several other funding sources in partnership with th

NACD STEWARDSHIP WEEK

Join RLCD in celebration of the thing we work to conserve - SOIL! It’s the foundation for all life and the basis of the agricultural industry right here on the Palouse. How often do you stop to consider the soil beneath your feet and the land that grows your food?

This week, we share about soil, and we thank our farmers, ranchers, and land managers for their stewardship of one of our most important natural resources!

Join us this week at Coffee Talk Friday to learn more about how you can get involved in conservation work to improve soil health and mitigate erosion on your property.

NACD STEWARDSHIP WEEK

What does stewardship mean to you? This week, the Rock Lake Conservation District celebrates Stewardship Week by focusing on soil! Many of our goals here at the CD are directly rooted in soil conservation.

Soil is one of our most important natural resources - and we aim to protect it! By promoting soil conservation practices such as direct seeding, buffer strips, and riparian bank stabilization, we can make big improvements in soil and water health.

Join us this week at Coffee Talk Friday to learn more about how you can get involved in conservation work to improve soil health and mitigate erosion on your property.

STUDENTS EXPLORE LOCAL CREEKS

Last week, students from the St. John and Endicott 2/3 classes visited their local creeks to learn more about wildlife habitats found right here in their communities.

In partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife School Cooperative Program, both classrooms have been raising rainbow trout to be released into Rock Lake this spring.

To strengthen their understanding of the trout life cycle and habitats, Department of Ecology educator Marnie and our own outreach coordinator, Maya, facilitated a hands-on creek exploration. The St. John students visited Pleasant Valley Creek, and the Endicott Students visited Rebel Flat Creek, both tributaries of the Palouse River and flowing right through their communities.

They learned how to conduct water quality tests in the field and investigated the types of plants, animals, and insects that are found in the local creeks. They recorded data and connected their findings to the needs of the trout they are raising.

We are so happy to get the opportunity to work with the next generation of conservationists!

Want to help shape young conservationists? Volunteer with our youth outreach programs! Visit our website or stop by the office to learn how you can get involved.

CONSERVATION PRACTICES - REDUCED TILLAGE

Residue and tillage management limits the amount of tillage before planting a crop in a way that keeps plant material on the surface of the soil. The Rock Lake Conservation District can help farmers access the equipment and support to transition to a direct seed planting system on their operations.

Reduced tillage practices offer great benefits to soil structure and health while reducing overall wind and water erosion, particularly in the steep hills of the Palouse. Meanwhile, farmers eliminate a pass across the field, saving them time and money.

Are you ready to make the upgrade to a direct seed system? Reach out to us today to learn how we can help you get started!

PRECISION AG UPGRADES

The Rock Lake Conservation District wants to assist local farmers and ranchers in purchasing precision agriculture upgrades for their equipment! Are you in need of an updated GPS or variable rate technology for your operation? We can help!

The RLCD mission is to serve landowners and land users by providing financial and technical assistance to encourage and implement sustainable management practices. In a time when expenses are high and farming brings great uncertainty, pursuing efficiency is vital to many operations. We are here to offer our time and resources to help land managers do their best work.
