Miss Mansour’s second grade class at Bibich has been busy learning, creating, and putting their thinking skills to work this week! 🐾📚

In math, students explored place value in a fun and hands-on way! They used Cheez-Its, pretzels, and marshmallows to build three-digit numbers and represent the hundreds, tens, and ones. This activity helped students visualize place value and see how each digit has a different value depending on its place.

In science, our students became scientists and engineers during a Mystery Science lesson! Students imagined they were stranded on a tropical island and needed to design a hat to protect their skin from the sun. Using what they learned about material properties, they created their own unique hats!

Throughout both activities, students were observing, problem-solving, designing, creating, and explaining their thinking. We love giving our second graders opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences that make learning meaningful, memorable, and FUN!

To kick off the 2026-2027 school year, Mrs. Sapyta and Mrs. Patrick announced a whole-school theme for the year. The theme is positive, encouraging, and a way to unify the staff and students with a common goal. For this school year, the theme is, “This is us! Every face is unique, every student belongs.” This inspired a whole school project to represent our wonderful and unique students and the inclusivity that is fostered throughout the year at Protsman Elementary. With the help of Mrs. Keller, the Protsman Art teacher, a banner with over 400 circles was created. Students were able to “doodle” their faces to represent their unique self within our Protsman community. The finished banner was then displayed for families to view during our Open House.

Second Grade Scientists at Work! 🔬✨

Ms. Frazier's second graders at Bibich put their science skills—and their creativity—to work during a recent Mystery Science lesson on material properties!

Students imagined being stranded on a tropical island and they needed to create a hat to protect their skin from the sun: using what they learned to design and create their own hats! 🧢👒🎩

Throughout the activity, students were busy observing, testing, problem-solving, designing, and creating. They discovered that scientists and engineers have to think carefully about the materials they choose and how those materials will work for their intended purpose.

We love seeing our second graders learn through hands-on experiences that turn science concepts into something they can see, touch, test, and create! 💡🧪
