THE $380 MILLION MYSTERY
If you’re a resident of Coldwater, you probably woke up Wednesday morning feeling a little bit lighter. On Tuesday night, common sense actually won. You and your neighbors looked at a staggering $64 million school bond—a massive debt package that the people in charge said was "vital" and you rejected it.
It was the third time in five years that the "experts" at the school board office have tried to shake you down for a new building, and it was the third time you told them "No."
But why did they need $64 million? They’ll tell you "it's for the kids." They’ll tell you the classrooms don't meet "modern safety standards." They’ll act as if they’ve been living on a diet of crumbs and hope for the last decade.
But we looked at the books. We looked at the numbers they don't put in the colorful brochures. And what we found should make every taxpayer in the county demand an audit.

Nearly $380 million dollars. That is what has flowed through Coldwater Community Schools since 2016. For a district that serves barely 2,700 students. Think about that. You have spent nearly $140,000 per student over the last ten years.
If you spent $380 million on a town of Coldwater’s size, you should have gold-plated chalkboards and a teacher for every three kids. Instead, Superintendent Paul Flynn—who enjoys a salary of over $186,000 a year plus benefits—is telling you the buildings are falling apart.
If they’ve spent $380 million in ten years, and the buildings are still in "poor condition," where did the money go?
It didn't go into the classrooms. It didn't go into improving the "learning environment" they keep talking about. It went into the machine. It went to a bloated administration that grows even as enrollment remains flat or declines. They are spending **$16,000 per student, per year** just to keep the status quo, yet they still want $64 million more from you for "infrastructure."
It is a failure of management on a historic scale.
And they think you’re too dim to notice the pattern. They ask for $67 million in 2021. You say no. They ask for $53 million in 2022. You say no. So, what do they do? Do they cut waste? Do they tighten their belts like you have to do at your kitchen table? No. They wait two years and ask for $64 million. The arrogance is breathtaking. They aren't asking for your permission; they are trying to wear you down until you stop voting. They want you to believe that a "shiny" new school is the only way to save your children’s education.
But here’s the truth they’ll never admit: A fancy new hallway doesn't teach a kid how to read. A $64 million renovation doesn't improve a graduation rate. Discipline, high standards, and prioritizing students over administrative salaries do that.
The people of Coldwater didn't just reject a bond this week. They rejected a lie. They rejected the idea that a school district can spend $380 million in a decade and still come back begging for more.
They don't have a funding problem. They have a trust problem. And after seeing these numbers, why would anyone ever trust them with another dime?
