ST. JOSEPH POLICE SEEK PUBLIC’S HELP IN THEFT INVESTIGATION

The City of St. Joseph and the St. Joseph Police Department are asking for the public’s assistance in an ongoing investigation involving a significant theft from the Orange and White Shop located on Shelton Drive in St. Joseph.

The theft is believed to have occurred sometime within the past two weeks and was discovered by the property owners on Saturday. The investigation is now being handled by the St. Joseph Police Department.

Earlier today, St. Joseph officers assisted the property owners in recovering some of the stolen property that had been hidden in a wooded area behind the shop.

A substantial amount of property remains missing, including:

• A large blue or green safe
• Fi****ms
• Jewelry
• Welders and welding equipment
• Torch tanks
• New semi-truck tires and rims
• Wheeled battery charger
• Kayaks
• Power tools
• Sockets, screwdrivers, wrenches and other hand tools
• Cherry picker/engine hoist
• Small metal trailer
• Impact tools
• Tools and equipment used for working on semi-trucks
• Old coins
• Other shop-related tools and equipment

Investigators are particularly interested in any information concerning suspicious activity in the Shelton Drive area during the past two weeks, including anyone who may have observed a box truck, rental truck, trailer or other vehicle being used to transport property from the location.

Residents, pawn shops, tool dealers and others are also asked to be alert for any of these items being offered for sale.

A reward is being offered by the property owner for information leading to an arrest or the recovery of the missing property.

Anyone with information regarding this theft, the location of the stolen property, or individuals who may have been involved is urged to contact the St. Joseph Police Department.

Please do not confront anyone you believe may be involved. Contact law enforcement and allow our officers to follow up on the information.

The St. Joseph Police Department is proud to work alongside our Utilities/Public Works crew, and we appreciate the hard work they put in every day to help keep our city safe, maintained, and running. 🤝

The City of St. Joseph would like to recognize and thank the employees of our Utilities/Public Works Department for their continued hard work, dedication, and service to our community.

This summer’s frequent rainfall has caused unusually fast grass and vegetation growth, making mowing and grounds maintenance a constant challenge. Our three-man crew continues to maintain City grounds, the park, flower beds, State right-of-ways, drainage areas, signs, and other public spaces, often working through the summer heat, rain, and other inclement weather to get the job done.

Their responsibilities go far beyond mowing. They read water and gas meters, respond to and repair leaks, help maintain our utility systems, perform maintenance on City buildings and facilities, work on City vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment, assist with streets and drainage, handle storm cleanup and fallen limbs, and take care of countless other needs that arise throughout the City.

Their work also does not always end after their eight hour shift. They are often called out after hours, at night, and on weekends when a leak, utility issue, storm damage, or other problem simply cannot wait.

For a crew of only three employees, they carry an incredible amount of responsibility and are, in many ways, the people who keep St. Joseph going from one day to the next.

City Manager Chris D. Jackson said, “We are grateful for the dedication, versatility, and pride our Public Works crew brings to the job each day, and while much of their work happens behind the scenes, their efforts make a visible difference across St. Joseph."

"Whether they are responding to a leak after hours, maintaining our utilities, repairing equipment, or working outside in the heat and inclement weather, they continue to step up and do what is needed to keep our city going," he added.

FOUND: SADDLE & SADDLE PAD

The Saint Joseph Police Department is attempting to locate the owner of a saddle and saddle pad recently found in a wooded area near the horse rink at Saint Joseph City Park.

The items were discovered by two gentlemen who regularly spend time in our park. Rather than leaving them behind, they took the time to report the property to the City so we could help return it to its rightful owner. We sincerely appreciate them for looking out for our community and our parks.

To help verify ownership, photographs and identifying details of the saddle and saddle pad are intentionally not being released. Anyone claiming the items will be asked to provide an accurate description.

If you believe these items belong to you, or if you know who the owner may be, please contact Saint Joseph City Hall at 931-845-4141.

Our parks belong to the entire community, and we are grateful for the residents and visitors who help keep an eye out for one another and take pride in Saint Joseph.

UPDATE: The City Manager and Chief of Police were able to safely catch the dog and transport it to the animal shelter. It has now been reunited with the other pup, and we are hopeful they will both soon be adopted into loving homes.

Residents are asked to watch for the dog pictured below. This dog and another dog had been staying near St. Joe Park for several days.

After receiving information about the dogs, the City contacted Lawrence County Animal Control. Officers were able to safely capture one dog, but the dog pictured ran away before it could be secured.

We are trying to safely capture him and get him out of the extreme heat, especially since he does not have a reliable source of food or water. Our goal is to reunite the dogs, locate their original owner, or help them find safe adoptive homes.

Please do not chase the dog. If you see him, note the location and direction he is traveling, then contact the City as soon as possible so Animal Control has another opportunity to safely capture him.

St. Joseph Police Department Encourages Safe, Responsible Fourth of July Weekend

As families, friends, and neighbors prepare to celebrate Independence Day, Chief Adam Brewer and the St. Joseph Police Department are reminding everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and responsibly.

“The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate freedom, family, and community,” said Chief Brewer. “We want everyone to have a great weekend, enjoy the fireworks, and most importantly, make it home safely.”

The Department encourages residents and visitors to keep a few simple safety reminders in mind:

Drive sober. If you drink, do not drive. Designate a sober driver or arrange a safe ride home.

Buckle up. Seat belts save lives and should be worn every trip, every time.

Use fireworks responsibly. Follow all applicable laws, keep water nearby, supervise children closely, and be respectful of neighbors.

Watch out for pedestrians and children. Holiday gatherings often mean more people walking near streets and neighborhoods.

Protect your pets. Fireworks can scare animals, so keep them safe, secure, and indoors when possible.

“We want the only flashing lights you see this weekend to be fireworks,” Chief Brewer added.

CITY OF ST. JOSEPH LAUNCHES OPERATION FIRST IMPRESSION TO HELP CLEAN UP TOWN

The City of St. Joseph is launching Operation First Impression, a citywide ordinance enforcement initiative focused on protecting the cleanliness, safety, and quality of life of our community.

“Every day, a community is judged by how it presents itself,” said City Manager Chris D. Jackson. “If we want St. Joseph to be successful economically and maintain a strong quality of life for our citizens, it is vital that we have a community that is clean and safe.”

Operation First Impression is about protecting neighborhoods, supporting property values, and making sure St. Joseph remains a place our citizens can be proud to call home. The initiative will be applied fairly and consistently across the city, with the goal of encouraging voluntary compliance whenever possible.

The City is willing to listen and work with residents who are making a genuine effort to correct problems. At the same time, ongoing neglect and repeated violations will not be ignored.

Enforcement will focus on common issues such as overgrown lots, trash and debris, stagnant water, junk vehicles, unsafe or unsanitary property conditions, animal-related violations, and unlawful use of temporary structures.

“This is about enforcing the ordinances already on the books and addressing violations that affect the safety, appearance, and livability of our community,” said Police Chief Adam Brewer. “We want voluntary compliance, but when necessary, citations will be issued and fines pursued through the court process.”

Residents and property owners are encouraged to address issues now before further action becomes necessary. Those with questions or who need guidance on how to come into compliance are encouraged to contact St. Joseph City Hall.

Operation First Impression is about taking pride in St. Joseph and making sure our community remains a clean, safe, and welcoming place to live.

KEY VIOLATIONS SUBJECT TO ENFORCEMENT

• Overgrown grass, weeds, brush, and excessive vegetation
• Trash, garbage, debris, and other unsanitary property conditions
• Stagnant water and conditions that attract mosquitoes, rodents, or vermin
• Dense smoke, soot, fumes, dust, or gases that may endanger health or damage property
• Junk or inoperable vehicles stored on private property or left on public streets beyond allowable limits
• Junkyards that are not properly maintained or enclosed as required by ordinance
• Livestock or domestic fowl running at large within city limits
• Dogs running at large or dangerous animals not being properly restrained
• Failure to provide animals with adequate food, water, shelter, ventilation, or sanitary conditions
• Excessive barking, howling, or other animal noise disturbances
• Occupied or used temporary structures that do not meet code requirements or lack proper permitting

ENFORCEMENT AND PENALTIES

Violations may result in citations, court action, fines of up to $50 per day until corrected, and other penalties allowed by law.
