Community members traveling the parkway and urban trail along Southwest Parkway near Hyde Park can expect to see construction next month for the new Fire Station 10.
The Native American sculptures will be safely stored while the work is in progress, and they will be relocated back to the area with the guidance of the Iowa Tribe.

Ground preparation work has begun for the new Fire Station 10, located at 303 East Hyde Park, with a groundbreaking tentatively scheduled for next month. The Native American sculptures will be safely stored away while the work is in progress for the new station to be later relocated back in the area with the guidance of the Iowa Tribe. Motorists are encouraged to use caution while driving in the area over the next couple of weeks.

This week is going to be hot! Cool off at the Liberty Oak Splash Park at Hyde Park. This free splash park is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Guests can turn on the water features by pressing the black buttons located on top of the red poles.

Tucked behind Northside Complex is a quiet spot filled with history. The Blakesnake Creek watershed area, found at the back of the park near Randolph Street, is now home to native plantings and a trail, but it once was the Maple Leaf route of the Chicago Great Western Railway Line. The route dates back to the late 1800s with its roundhouse located where Second Harvest Food Bank currently occupies. By using the rails to trails path, today's visitors can walk to the information station and enjoy the colorful plantings. The path connects Northside Complex to Grand Avenue and the paved urban trail system.

Over ten weeks, we had 140 walkers who checked in 641 times for approximately 1,366 miles! What a season! Thank you to everyone to walked, ran, or biked with us. We look forward to seeing you again next year! Until then, there are many locations for walking including an indoor track at The St. Joseph REC Center and countless miles or urban trails.

The Coleman Hawkins statue has been safely relocated in the southwest corner of Coleman Hawkins Park at Felix Street Square. Behind him, progress is being made at the new stage. The brick is laid and the roof is coming together. This project is funded by the park half cent sales tax approved by voters, and it will be completed this fall.
