St. Joseph Charter Township
St. Joseph Charter Township is a community of approximately 10,000 people located on the east shore of Lake Michigan, about 60 miles directly across the lake from Chicago. Situated in the northwest portion of Berrien County with a high level of regional and national access due to the area’s airport, rail and highway network.
Besides Lake Michigan, our most significant natural features include the St. Joseph River and Hickory Creek which trisect the Township. The cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor are on our north border, Benton Township to our east, Royalton Township to our southeast and Lincoln Township to our south.
The Township’s first permanent settler arrived in 1780 but it was another 50 years before true settlement began and the Township incorporated in 1832. In those early days land in the Township was predominantly agricultural, until the middle to late 20th century when commercial development was boosted by the automobile and the highway. Currently the Township is mainly residential a few commercial areas and numerous community parks.
