Friends of St Martin Shelter Information and pictures of the animals available at St. Martin Shelter. The St. Martin Parish Animal Services Program is the professional shelter manager of the parish facility.
(66)

The goals of the Animal Services Program are to promote responsible pet ownership through education of related matters, such as the importance of vaccinations, licensing, and realistic population control; and to maintain an effective Animal Services Shelter by attempting to reunite animals with their owners, placing pets in permanent, caring homes, and providing for humane solutions to animal control. Stray dogs and cats are held for five (5) days. The animals are cared for daily, regardless of weekends and holidays. When the allowed time has expired, the animal becomes public property. It is then evaluated for acceptance into our adoption program based on its health, age, temperament, and available space in our adoption kennels. Animals not accepted for the adoption program are humanely euthanized. There is no firm "adopt-by" date for dogs and cats entering our adoption program. They remain in the adoption program as long as they stay healthy and we have room. Up to 2,000 animals are impounded annually.

Thanks to the team work of multiple animal shelters, we were able to get all 22 dogs out of the shelter on a last minute flight to the west coast. Special thanks to Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter who helped load and transport our dogs last night, provided an overnight stay, and then transported them to Hammond for the flight this morning.

Also thanks to the Humane Society of the United States for sponsoring the flight. With out them, dogs from our shelter, Lafayette, Terrebonne, Iberia, Lafourche, and Calcasieu would not have been able to leave before the storm.

Local Animal Shelters Preparing for Hurricane Delta

Shelters are coordinating preparation efforts and post hurricane response.

Although there is still uncertainty where Hurricane Delta will make landfall, eight leading Louisiana animal shelters are actively working together to prepare for potential impacts and post storm response.

The Companion Animal Alliance of Baton Rouge (CAA), Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter (JPAS), Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center, Louisiana SPCA, St. Bernard Animal Shelter, St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter, St. Martin Animal Shelter and Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter are staged to respond to each other’s request for help when Hurricane Delta makes landfall in south Louisiana. Shelters that fall outside the immediate impact area have committed to support and aid animals and pet parents in neighboring parishes in the aftermath of the hurricane. The organizations will work together to coordinate animal rescue, donation needs and providing information to the community.

Moving Animals in Advance of Landfall
The Louisiana SPCA is coordinating the transport of adoptable animals out of southern Louisiana to partner shelters around the country. By reducing the number of animals in each shelter, animal organizations can quickly respond to animals in distress once the storm passes.

More than 100 animals are scheduled to be transported between Tuesday, Oct. 6 and Wednesday, Oct. 7. The animals will depart from the Louisiana SPCA and be transported to partner shelters at Wake County SPCA, The Humane Society of Charlotte, the Atlanta Humane Society and Houston SPCA. An additional transport will also be done through Wings of Rescue.

St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter, JPAS, St. Martin’s Animal Shelter, the Louisiana SPCA and CAA are actively working with the Louisiana State Animal Response Team to assist pet parents who evacuated from Lake Charles and are currently staying in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Hurricane Prep for Pets
Pet parents need to include pets in their evacuation plans. Under no circumstances should pets be left behind. When preparing to evacuate bring enough supplies for at least five days.
• Food and water
• Collar with up-do-date ID tags
• Leash or harness
• Pet carrier
• Vaccination records (required at all boarding facilities)
• Medications
• Documentation
• Sanitation supplies
• Litter box and litter

Harlow says hey to all her friends and family at the shelter. She is a doing great and loving life. Everyday she lets me know that I am her human.
Such gorgeous black dogs:-) Especially fond of Dorthy:-) She looks like such a sweetheart:-) Somebody go and *boop* this sweet girl on her dear snoot:-)
We just wanted to thank you for relocating Fiona to our local Humane Society in Florida. We fostered and adopted her and now call her Jazzy in tribute to her Louisiana roots. We couldn’t be happier with our new family member. She has now been spayed and is going through heartworm treatment. Your organization played a huge roll in our having her with us. Thank you so much.
