Wind advisory update from your local fire department:

If it’s not tied down, screwed down, or parked on it… it’s probably in the next zip code by now. 🌬🚒

We have heard reports of runaway trash cans, trampolines trying to achieve flight, and lawn furniture that had apparently decided it no longer wanted to live at your house. If your grill cover or patio umbrella lands in someone else’s yard, that’s not an emergency… that’s just Mother Nature redistributing property. 😉

We hope everyone is staying safe and slowing down for debris in the roadways!

🚒 Fire Department Training Night – Turbo Draft & Drafting Operations 🌊🔥

Tonight’s training focused on rural water supply operations, specifically using the Turbo Draft appliance and floating strainers. These tools are critical when hydrants aren’t available and water must be moved from ponds, lakes, or other static sources.

🔹 Turbo Draft
• The Turbo Draft is a water movement appliance powered by a pumper that can deliver water from a static source up to a few hundred feet away.
• It works by using a jet siphon principle—sending a small amount of pressurized water through the unit to create suction and draft water back to the pumper.
• This allows firefighters to access water where it would otherwise be impossible to get an engine close enough.

🔹 Floating Strainers
• Floating strainers keep the intake just below the surface of the water, avoiding mud, debris, and ice that can clog traditional strainers.
• They’re especially valuable in shallow ponds or creeks, where depth is limited but water is still usable.
• By staying off the bottom, they reduce the risk of damaging pumps and maintain a steady water flow.

Tonight’s hands-on practice let the crew work through different scenarios—setting up the Turbo Draft for long-distance water supply operations and positioning floating strainers for drafting. Both are essential skills for ensuring reliable water in rural firefighting.

Great job to everyone who trained tonight—these skills keep us ready to deliver water when called upon.

Todd Edwards’ Training on Fireground Tactics & Inclusive Rescue

We had the privilege of attending Todd Edwards’ training on fireground tactics for multi-family and mid-rise operations, and it was nothing short of outstanding. Todd’s deep knowledge and real-world experience brought an entirely new level of understanding to the challenges these structures present. His focus on efficient, aggressive, and well-coordinated tactics gave us practical strategies that can be immediately applied in the field.

What truly set this training apart was Todd’s emphasis on serving and saving people with disabilities. Fireground operations must be inclusive, and his approach to understanding mobility, sensory, and cognitive impairments was eye-opening. The real-world scenarios and hands-on strategies made it clear that being prepared for every occupant’s needs is just as critical as extinguishing the fire itself.

If you have the chance to attend training with Todd Edwards, do not miss it. His passion, knowledge, and ability to break down complex tactics make this an absolute must for any firefighter looking to improve their skills and truly make a difference in their community.

Firefighter Training: The LEGO Challenge

Firefighters are no strangers to high-pressure situations, where clear communication, dexterity, and patience can mean the difference between success and failure. One unique way to sharpen these skills is through the LEGO Challenge—a training exercise that’s as frustrating as it is effective.

Wearing gloves and air packs, firefighters must assemble a small LEGO structure. The catch? They can’t see the instructions. Instead, one team member, positioned in a separate area, receives the step-by-step directions over the radio and must relay them to the hands-on builder.

This drill isn’t just about having fun (though it definitely brings some laughs). It tests:
✅ Radio Communication – Clear, concise, and calm directions are critical in emergency situations.
✅ Dexterity Under Pressure – Thick gloves make even simple tasks feel impossible, mimicking the challenge of handling equipment in real-life scenarios.
✅ Teamwork & Patience – Miscommunication leads to mistakes, reinforcing the importance of listening and adapting.

In the field, every second counts. This exercise helps firefighters refine their ability to work efficiently, even when conditions aren’t ideal. Plus, if you can build a LEGO truck in gear, you can definitely operate life-saving tools with confidence!

Would you try this challenge? Let us know your thoughts!
