Elkland Search and Rescue

Elkland Search and Rescue Elkland search and rescue was established in 1985 in Elk county PA Marys, PA area. The building, 28 feet by 42 feet is where we call home.

Elkland Search and Rescue started out in 1984 as a group of about 12 friends whom were concerned about the safety of others in the wilderness that surrounds the St. This concern came after a cargo plane crashed in the middle of winter and the search and recovery mission took several days to find and get to the crash site. This group initially established the "Campowner's Search and Rescue team" wi

th the name "Campowner's" coming from the name of the organization that gave Elkland the use of their building and grounds for meetings and training. As time went on, the group of friends quickly grew as the word spread of their idea to start a Search and Rescue team. Within a few months and numerous meetings the group had by-laws in the works and a Board of Directors in the early stages. They quickly established a command system to handle the "field" of the organization with the Board of Directors in place to handle business of the organization. The board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 3 Directors, with one of the Director positions being filled by the Commander of the organization. Due to their quick growth, the group decided to change their name and they became Elkland Search and Rescue named after the County and the animals that roam here. By 1992, the group had grown to around 45 members and was in need of a place to call home, so with the commitment of the team and the gracious gifts of the Elk County community, Elkland built their building to fit their needs.

This past Friday, Saturday and Sunday some members of Elkland Sar traveled to the Clearfield County Office of Emergency Services to participate in a Wide Area Search Class. This class focused on natural disaster response and terrorism incidents. Members of various Emergency Services traveled from both the local areas and some members from the US Border Patrol from Vermont traveled in to participate in the class.

The Instructors are members of the National Urban Search and Rescue Teams. They brought years of their skills, knowledge, lessons learned and experience into the classroom from responding to incidents like tornados, flooding incidents, hurricanes and terroristic incidents.

Some of the discussions included organizing, mobilizing and best use of resources for diseasters. Proper techniques for searching for victims and proper documentation practices for damaged homes and buildings were discussed and practiced in the class. Hands on Search Techniques and proper building and land coverage after a disaster were also part of the class.

The information learned is something Elkland Members hope they never need to use. But if requested, have a better understanding and have learned the proper skills needed to initiate a response to a disaster in our response area.

Monday night at 11:30pm came the first notification that assistance was needed for this search. Due to travel time, about 2.5 hours, and lack of sleep issues, the decision was made to allow the team to slèep for awhile. At 4:30am, the pagers went off, alerting the team members, they were needed in Crawford County. 10 Elkland Members and the equipment traveled to the below Fire Department and went to work with all the other Emergency Responders. Around 11:30am the gentleman was located by search teams, medically evaluated, and due to exposure to the elements for such an extended time period, the decision was made to send him to the hospital to be evaluated.

Working with, and seeing everyone come together to bring this individual home is a Great Experience! Government Agencies, Volunteer Sar Teams, Fire and EMS Departments all did their part to make this happen.

Special Shout Out, to the Church Group of Ladies who wouldn't allow anyone to go home until we were all fed!

All equipment was cleaned and the team returned back in service around 5:15pm, ready for the next call.

The below article is well written and worth the read.

Every time we are requested to assist at a horrific situation like this, we see so many Good things at a Terrible Situation. Please allow me to explain. We arrived on scene and people are working together to end a nightmare for others. Some left a child's ball game, the supper table, or they may have left their lawnmower sitting in their front lawn, where they shut it off and ran to help others in need. Some leave jobs, maybe others were working on their car?

When the pagers go off, people are dropping what they are doing to help those in need. Women and men are coming from other communities and counties to help their fellow emergency departments and those in need. Ambulance services are on scene, not only for the victims of the fire, but also checking the vitals of the fireman to keep them healthy and also heaven forbid. they have a heath issue.

Still others, businesses, clubs and individuals are making some food and gathering drinks to bring to the scene to provide nutrients for the First Responders.

Friday as the sun starts to rise, the victims will start to put the pieces of their lives back together. First Responders will continue on with their lives and reflect of the incident of the night before. Keep all these individuals in your thoughts and prayers. We never know what may happen next and who may be requesting help.

Be Safe...........
