Every day, first responders, healthcare workers, veterans, survivors of violence, accident victims, and countless others carry the effects of traumatic experiences. PTSD can impact anyone, and seeking help is a sign of strength—not weakness.

This month, we encourage our community to learn more about PTSD, support those who may be struggling, and help break the stigma surrounding mental health.

During EMS Week, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible men and women of Calhoun County EMS who answer the call every single day — no matter the hour, the weather, or the circumstances.

Our crews serve this community with compassion, professionalism, courage, and heart. They are there on some of the hardest days in people’s lives, providing care, comfort, and hope when it matters most.

To the citizens of Calhoun County — thank you for trusting us to care for you and your families. Your support means more than you know. Rural EMS faces many challenges, but our providers continue to show up with dedication and pride because they truly care about this community.

🎉 Student Spotlight: Congratulations Matthew Cole & Joshua Zeigler! 🚑

Please join Calhoun County EMS in congratulating Matthew Cole and Joshua Zeigler on successfully completing the Paramedic Program at Lowcountry Regional EMS Academy!

This year-long program demands an incredible amount of dedication, perseverance, and hard work. Over the course of the program, Matthew and Joshua completed more than 1,500 hours of education and training that included:

📚 Extensive reading and studying
🎓 Classroom lectures and testing
🩺 Skill lab training days
🚑 Ambulance ride-alongs
🏥 Hospital clinical rotations
❤️ Hands-on patient care experiences

Becoming a paramedic is one of the most challenging and rewarding journeys in EMS. Both of these individuals have demonstrated commitment, professionalism, and a true passion for caring for others throughout the process.

We are extremely proud of Matthew and Joshua for reaching this major milestone and representing our service so well. The future of EMS is brighter because of dedicated providers like them.

At Calhoun County EMS, our mission goes beyond responding to emergencies — it’s about caring for our community every single day.

Our Community Paramedic Program is designed to help bridge gaps in healthcare by providing support, education, follow-up care, wellness checks, and resources to citizens throughout Calhoun County. This program helps improve patient outcomes, reduce unnecessary hospital visits, and ensure our residents receive compassionate care even after the ambulance leaves.

Today, we would like to recognize Capt. Starr for the dedication, compassion, and hard work poured into serving the citizens of our county through this program. The impact being made in the lives of our patients and families does not go unnoticed.

🚑 EMS MYTH vs FACT 🚑

MYTH: EMS only drives patients to the hospital.

FACT: EMS providers deliver lifesaving medical care long before a patient ever reaches the hospital. From cardiac arrests and strokes to trauma, breathing emergencies, pediatric emergencies, and critical medications — paramedics and EMTs bring emergency medicine directly to the patient.

At Calhoun County EMS, our crews are trained to assess, treat, stabilize, and make critical decisions in some of the most challenging situations imaginable — often within seconds.
