With heavy hearts we regret to inform the community of brother George Cady’s passing.

George was a dedicated member of the Urbana Fire Division for over 25 years and touched countless lives.

If you knew George, feel free to comment a story or memory you have with him, I’m sure there are tons.

Arrangements are still being made and we will share those when they are available.

Day 4 of EMS week. Did you know that the JSP Fire District has not always provided EMS services? In the late 1970’s Johnson-St. Paris EMS was formed. Some of those original members still live in this area. It was a private organization that operated off of contracts and bill money. In 2009, the fire district consumed the EMS when planning for the new fire station. In 2010, when the fire station opened, both organizations started operating as one, under one roof.

Day 3 of EMS week. Our EMS covers approximately 145 square miles that includes two counties, 5 townships and 3 villages, taking over 1,000 calls a year. Our service area touches, and provides mutual aid to Urbana, German Township, Macochee, Rosewood, Troy and Piqua.

Second day of EMS week! Let’s talk about continuing education. Once someone becomes an EMT, they’re required to continue their education and recertify with the state of Ohio every 3 years. EMTs must complete 40 hours of training, Advanced EMTs must complete 60 hours of training and Paramedics must complete 75 hours of training.

If they hold a fire certification, they must complete 56 hours of additional training.

Inspectors must complete 24 hours of training

Instructors must complete 6 hours, plus teach at least 24 hours.

JSP is committed to making sure all employees have the opportunity to acquire these hours. We host a minimum of two trainings a month. Premier Health, Kettering Health, CareFlight, Children’s Dayton and Mercy Health all help in training our personnel.

With EMS week being this week, we would like to take this time to thank the 43 EMS members we have on our department for everything that they do for this community and surrounding communities.

With these people, we are able to run 3 ALS ambulances, with only 1 being staffed 24/7 currently.

We are very fortunate that we have the folks we have to take over 1,000 calls a year.

How do you know everything is ready to go?

We check fire trucks monthly. Trucks get a thorough once over, washed and bay floors get cleaned.

And after truck checks, we conduct a couple hours of fire training.

Medics get checked daily (because they’re busy and need checked more often to make sure equipment gets replaced that is used).
