Today marks one year since the tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School.

Every day since then, I’ve thought about what those families went through that morning and what they’ve had to carry every day since. No parent, educator, or first responder should ever have to experience that kind of loss or fear.

In the time since that day, I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with Annunciation parents who have been incredibly generous in sharing what they saw, what they learned, and where they believe changes are needed.

This session, legislation was drafted addressing ARS, mental health, firearm safety, and school safety funding. I also authored bipartisan legislation requiring social media companies to report credible threats of mass violence to Minnesota public safety officials, including the Fusion Center and local law enforcement. We worked with colleagues through the Suburban Solutions Caucus, parents, the BCA, DPS, and school officials on a broader set of ideas aimed at improving prevention, communication, and early intervention.

That legislation passed the House but failed in the Senate. I’ll continue working to get it across the finish line and to find other ways we can make our communities safer.

There are places where we can do better, find common ground, and we have a responsibility to keep working toward them.

I’m grateful to the Annunciation parents who have continued to push that conversation forward with me and others, even when doing so means revisiting the most painful moments of their lives.

One of the things Annunciation families are asking of all of us today is simple: do something kind for someone else in honor and remembrance of those impacted. It doesn’t have to be anything big. A small act for a neighbor, a friend, a stranger, or someone who simply needs it is a meaningful way to remember and stand with the Annunciation community.

Today is about remembering what was lost and standing with the Annunciation community. When we return to the Capitol, our responsibility is to take what we’ve learned and turn it into more meaningful action and results.

Thursday, Aug. 27 marks one year since the deadly mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis. Now, the community is focused on healing, with many channeling their grief into action.

As America marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, I’ve found myself thinking more about community and service and even less about politics.

A country like ours doesn’t move forward on its own. It depends on people who care about the places right in front of them: their families, neighborhoods, schools, churches, small businesses, parks and lakes, and the communities they hope their children will one day call home.

America has faced its share of difficult chapters, yet we’ve continued to move forward because generation after generation chose to build, serve, repair, create, and believe the future was still worth working toward. That same responsibility belongs to us today.

As a dad, I want my kids to grow up with a deep appreciation for this country, not as something abstract or distant, but as the place that gives them the freedom to learn, work, speak, dream, and build lives of purpose. I hope they also understand that those freedoms were secured by the sacrifices of others, including my father, whose military service and decades of caring for patients in our community shaped my own understanding of service.

On America’s 250th birthday, I’m grateful for what we’ve inherited and hopeful about what we can leave behind for the next generation.

Mound Fire Department Chief Gregg Pederson’s more than 50 years of service have left a lasting impact on our community. This House proclamation recognizing his extraordinary career is a small token of appreciation for everything he has done.

It was an honor to serve alongside Gregg as a council member, and I wish him and his family all the best in retirement.
