Memorial Day is about people.

People who had families, plans, work to do, and stories still being written. People who served this country and did not get the chance to come home and keep living those stories.

Today, we remember them, and we remember the families who carry those stories forward.

I’m grateful for the country they defended and the freedom we have because of them.

As we move through the final week of session, a lot of the debate at the Capitol comes down to priorities.

Last week, I voted no on a bill to increase security at the Capitol. Not because Capitol security doesn’t matter. It does. But before we spend more money protecting elected officials, I believe we should be doing everything we can to protect kids in our schools.

We’ve also taken important votes on the health bill and federal conformity, both of which have real impacts on our state budget and the services Minnesotans rely on. These are not always easy votes, but my focus remains the same: responsible decisions, clear priorities, and doing what’s right for the people I represent.

Thank you to everyone who continues to reach out and stay engaged during these final days of session.

Happy Mother’s Day.

There’s no way to fully measure what a mom means to a family. The love, the worry, the work, and the little things done day after day all add up to something we’re lucky to receive but can never fully repay.

Thank you to every mom across our district. I hope today brings you the love and appreciation you deserve.

During debate on the Health bill, I offered an amendment to make a simple point: when state government builds new systems, hires staff, enters contracts, and creates bureaucracy around a federal requirement, there are real costs attached.

Minnesota cannot keep treating government growth like it happens in a vacuum. Every new program, rule, office, or compliance structure takes time, money, and staff. Those costs eventually fall on taxpayers.

My amendment used the same trigger already being discussed in the bill and applied it to the state bureaucracy tied to federal conformity. If the requirement goes away, the government structure built around it should not simply continue on autopilot.

We need to be honest about the full cost of state government and make sure agencies are accountable to the people paying the bills.

Last night, I spoke on the House floor about what small businesses actually need from state government.

It's not another short-term handout. They need a stable environment where they can hire, grow, and compete.

Something they have been pleading for - for some time now.

Every mandate, every tax increase, every new cost, and every layer of uncertainty adds up. For the people taking risks, making payroll, and keeping our communities moving, those decisions matter.

If we’re serious about helping small businesses, we should be focused on lowering costs, reducing unnecessary burdens, enforcing the rule of law, and creating a climate where people can build and succeed.

Small businesses want to grow. They want to thrive. They just need state government to stop making it harder.

HCMC is one of the most important hospitals in Minnesota, and it’s under serious pressure right now.

More than 40% of the patients it serves come from Greater Minnesota. At the same time, it lost about $150 million last year. That’s not sustainable, and it points to a bigger issue, the state isn’t keeping up with the actual cost of care for patients on public programs.

You’re going to hear proposals like new sales taxes. I’m looking at another option, using existing dollars more responsibly to stabilize HCMC and setting up a Medicaid-only uncompensated care pool so hospitals have a way to recover some of those costs.

We’ll be taking a closer look at this in committee. What we decide in the next few weeks is going to matter.

This comes down to priorities. Do we step in and fix it, or do we keep going down the same path?

I’ll keep working for a solution.

Another tax is a shortcut, not a solution.

We can stabilize HCMC in the short-term using existing resources, but if we don’t address the real issues driving these costs, nothing changes. Minnesotans deserve a plan that actually fixes the problem, not one that just shifts the burden.

Full piece below:

If we’re serious about protecting HCMC in the long term, another raised tax won’t cut it, state Rep. Danny Nadeau writes.
