Thursday Throwback Governors Fire Prevention Day Historical Tid Bits

Tributes and Significant Events

Governors Fire Prevention Day has been a part of the Minnesota State Fair for over 20years. Throughout the years there has been many significant events that affected the day’s activities and times when we have paid tribute and acknowledged the tragedies that had occurred in the year between. Today we reflect on three of them.

September 11, 2001 terrorists attacked the United States. After 9/11 New York native, speed painter Michael Israel produced several paintings to raise funds for the victims of 9/11 including his famous “9/11 Hero” painting. In 2002 Michael Israel was doing an evening performance of his speed painting at the State Fair Grandstand. During Governors Fire Prevention Day after the Flag Raising Ceremony he made a special speed painting appearance and afterwards he greeted firefighters, signed paintings, and gave many of the firefighters the brushes he used in the performance.

In August of 2005, a category 5 hurricane called Katrina was forming in the Atlantic. It was predicted to hit the states along the Gulf Coast the last week of August. On August 22nd, Governors Fire Prevention Day, a request came in from the State of Louisiana via Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) and serval fire prevention day participants responded. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), American Red Cross, the Flag Raising Ceremony Chaplain, volunteers that were helping with activities, and many firefighters had to working booths and displays left Governors Day to make the trip to the Gulf Coast and help with the aftermath of Katrine.

On April 10, 2014 ten year old Perri Heideman died in a hay bale fire on her family farm in Adrien, Minnesota. The only fire caused that could not be ruled out was that Perri started the fire. Perri’s parents, Lonna and Todd Heideman wanted to share her story in the hopes that Perri’s story would save lives. At Governors Fire Prevention Day in 2014, Governor Dayton gave Perri’s entire family matching purple “Perri” shirts. For part of the day the family was at the State Fire Marshals booth sharing their message and handing out rubber “Perri” bracelets.
