The Ashby Public School kids were counting down the days until summer break, but CO Ryan Brown certainly had their attention! He spent time with a first-grade class last week, discussing Minnesota’s mammals, his work as a conservation officer, and answering all their questions.

We wish them and all students and fun and safe summer!

You put a lot of planning into your day on the water — packing the snacks, sunscreen, towels, and toys. Make sure safety is part of that plan, too.

Life jackets save lives, and the best time to wear one is before you even step onto the dock. Kids under 10 are required to wear a properly fitted life jacket while boating, but this message is for adults too. When the whole family wears one, everyone is safer.

Safety starts at the dock. Wear your life jacket and help make sure your day on the water ends with good memories.

Hear from CO Hudson Ledeen, who’s based in Hovland in far northeastern Minnesota and often patrols the Boundary Waters:

“We’re out there and people are really surprised to see us and most of the time really excited to see us.”

Training matters. Partnerships matter. And when it comes to keeping Minnesota’s waterways safe, preparation makes all the difference.

Each year, the Minnesota DNR Marine Unit hosts “Basic Boat School” — an intensive week-long training for sheriff’s deputies from across the state. This year, 20 deputies from 20 different agencies took part. They train in boating case law, seated field sobriety testing, BUI enforcement, boat handling and maneuvering, trailering and launching, pulling alongside vessels, and water survival skills.

The hands-on training builds confidence, strengthens partnerships between agencies, and prepares officers for real-world situations they may encounter on the water.

Whether in the classroom, at the pool, or on the water, this training equips officers to better serve the public and promote safe, enjoyable time on Minnesota’s waterways.

Thank you to all the deputies, instructors, and partners who make this important training possible.

That’s a good dog!

One of our new K9s, Molly, was working an AIS check station along the St. Croix River yesterday. It was her first day in the field with her handler, CO Matt Brodin, and she was checking a pontoon that was about to be backed into the river.

She quickly alerted to the scent of zebra mussels and further investigation turned up a number of the invasives on the pontoon. DNR staff promptly decontaminated it before allowing it to be launched.

Our K9s and their handlers work hard to protect Minnesota’s people and natural resources – and this was a great start to Molly’s career!

Three conservation officers from our Honor Guard had the solemn honor this past week to travel to Maine for the funeral of Maine Warden Service Pilot Joshua Tibbetts, who died May 12 in the line of duty.

Capts. Aaron Kahre and Jake Willis and CO Felicia Znajda represented the Enforcement Division to recognize the legacy of Tibbetts, who served the people and natural resources of Maine with distinction during his 18-year career.

We’re keeping his family, colleagues, and friends in our thoughts and prayers.

It’s going to be a busy weekend on the water!

If you’re heading out this Memorial Day weekend, please prioritize your safety. The water in many places is still cold and an unexpected fall in could have tragic consequences.

A few things to keep in mind:

* Wear a life jacket
* Wear your engine cut-off lanyard
* Leave the alcohol on shore
* Pay attention and reduce distractions when operating a boat

We’ll see you out there!

Here’s one you don’t see every day.

Last week, CO Brady Manteufel received a call about a deer in a field with a water softener salt bag on its head. When he arrived, the deer was fatigued and walking in circles. He was able to approach the deer and remove the bag.

Thankful for its newfound freedom, the whitetail ran off quickly – apparently no worse for the wear.
