A local Minneapolis listener is searching for a SOF discussion group in the Twin Cities. Does anyone have a group he might join?

Can anyone help with a question we received from St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis? They host a weekly discussion group using SOF and ask: "We are curious if other churches have a SOF class. Are they doing what we are doing or something else? I only know of one other church that has a SOF class and they use archived material rather than that morning's show."

Here's a taste of a new show we're producing with physics professor Arthur Zajonc: "I think the reflective and contemplative has a lot to offer not only as a hygiene for student life, for cultivation of attention, but even as a mode of inquiry, even as a way of knowing, which is after all the central project that universities and colleges are engaged in."

Over on our main FB page, Suzi Kelley
wrote this on our wall about this week's show with astrophysicist Mario Livio: "Spent time in
lavender field moving mulch and soil away from each plant while
listening to Krista's interview with Mario.... listened twice and still
will read the transcript. So many implications for science and math
educators such as myself. Love it."

Astrophysicist Mario Livio studies dark energy and white dwarfs. Working with NASA and the Hubble Space Telescope, he says these 'images have become part of our culture.' Through that window, he sees cosmic puzzles and questions that are as rich as any of their current answers.

Do others have ideas to share with SOF listener Leanne Perry Edwards who teaches at a public school in "the heart of the Bible belt" and asks how to "approach the sometimes sensitive subject of faith in order to get students to learn more about other faiths as well as their own."?

Check out this fascinating syllabus for a Social/Science/Fiction course at American University that focuses on "the cultural politics of alien encounter." Professor Patrick Thaddeus Jackson warns his students: "Do not try to out-geek the professor.. He has been attending both Star Trek and Star Wars conventions since before you were born."

These next few weeks we have Tess Perese, a high school student from the Blake School interning with us. She tells us that SOF "offered a new and interesting way to learn about the controversial material in my comparative religion class." Has SOF helped you open up a conversation about touchy or difficult topics? Tell us more.

We've received quite a few emails from teachers in response to this week's show about Autism. Connie Morgan from Wadsworth, Ohio writes in with a request for guidance:

"I would be so very appreciative for info that could help me, a teacher, with
the one autistic student I seem to have every year...I want so much to make their school experience pleasant. It is so much trial and
error. I don't like the error part because I am afraid it hurts my students."

One of every 110 children is now diagnosed to be somewhere on the mysterious spectrum of autism. We step back from the controversies about the causes and cures of autism and explore one family's experience with an autistic child. Jennifer Elder, an artist, and Paul Collins, a literary historian, hav...
