Virginia Coal Heritage Trail The Heart of Appalachia Tourism Authority is the lead organization in the creation of the official state legislated Virginia Coal Heritage Trail.

325 mile driving trail in the Heart of Appalachia Tourism Region, encompassing the seven coalfield counties in far Southwest Virginia to include Tazewell, Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, Lee, Scott and Wise and the City of Norton We are dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the coalfield region of Virginia. We seek to educate the public and encourage preservation and restoration of historic locations, buildings and culture.

Students got to learn all about DMME and the agency's work to keep miners safe and protect the environment. Following the annual event, DMME presented the first PIlot Program Grant for improvements at the mine for $1.5 million.
