It’s World Turtle Day, and a great reminder that roadway mortality is a major threat to turtles in Minnesota.

A new project near the Cannon River Turtle Preserve Scientific and Natural Area is working to reduce that risk. A three-quarter mile fence between two MnDOT bridges will help guide turtles and other wildlife toward safer passage under the bridge. Earlier tests of this fencing, developed with the Minnesota Zoo, reduced turtle fatalities by 91%.
