Amanda Clawson knows a thing or two about building strength.
As the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s (BCA) training lead and program administrator, she works behind the scenes to strengthen the systems that help Minnesota law enforcement professionals develop their skills. Outside of work, she helps women build physical strength and confidence as a certified personal trainer.
Though the two roles may seem different, both are rooted in something Amanda cares deeply about: helping people grow.
Amanda joined the BCA in 2023 as a communications specialist. After two years in that role, she transitioned to BCA Training, where she helps keep programs running smoothly, coordinates with partners across greater Minnesota and leads training communications and marketing.
Before joining the BCA, Amanda spent more than 20 years as a copy editor for a Christian book publisher. During that time, she also discovered a passion for fitness. She has completed several sprint triathlons, two marathons, and even a Half Ironman. Wanting to help others reach their own goals, she became a certified group fitness instructor in 2013 and earned her personal training certification in 2015.
Amanda is especially passionate about helping women over 35 feel comfortable lifting weights.
“Lifting weights can be very intimidating to women,” she said. “My goal for myself and everyone I train is to be strong and healthy for the highest quality of life for as long as possible.”
At the BCA, Amanda finds similar purpose in supporting a program that serves law enforcement professionals throughout the state.
“BCA Training provides a service to Minnesota law enforcement that directly or indirectly affects all Minnesotans,” she said. “I love being part of a team that makes a difference.”
Outside of work, Amanda and her husband have a blended family with five children – his three boys and her two girls. With several high school and college graduations ahead, she jokes that their home is less like the Brady Bunch and more like a circus.
It is a full life, but Amanda approaches it much like she approaches her work and fitness: one step, one challenge and one opportunity to grow stronger at a time.
