I will be out at the Minnesota State Fair today at the Forward Independence booth. Come on by!

If you’re a candidate throughout Minnesota, let’s have a conversation about how we can work together to stop fraud, waste, and abuse. Also, how I’m going after the corruption too!

A sitting Minnesota State Representative posted this comment directly on the Forward Independence Party’s Twitter page in response to the Minnesota Forward Together Coalition. In a later post he said “no, there is no room for bipartisanship.”

This is why the coalition is so important.

People can disagree on issues without assuming the other side has abandoned “objective truth.”

Are there people on both sides who aren’t serious or interested in actually governing? Absolutely. We’d love to see them voted out.

But the problem isn’t that Republicans and Democrats disagree. They should disagree. The problem is that too many politicians have decided disagreement means they can’t work together on anything.

Minnesota Forward Together is about helping to elect people who want to solve problems instead of dividing Minnesota into two permanent teams that are expected to hate each other.

Our State Auditor candidate Jay Reeves will be at the booth today. Come meet Jay, ask him your questions, and hear his ideas for stopping fraud before it happens and restoring independence and accountability to our great state.

The Minnesota Forward Together Coalition is a group of candidates endorsed by different parties who are committed to putting the people they represent over those parties.

That takes courage. As Tara Killen explains in this video, there can be real ramifications for putting principle ahead of party.

But isn’t that exactly what we should want from our candidates?

MINNESOTA FORWARD TOGETHER FAQ #7 - Will Minnesota Forward Together candidates vote together?

Sometimes they may. Sometimes they won't.

There is no commitment to vote as a bloc, no shared legislative agenda and no requirement that one candidate support legislation simply because another coalition member does.

That's intentional.

Minnesota Forward Together isn't asking candidates to check their principles at the door. Each candidate remains accountable to their constituents, their own values and their own political judgment.

So what is the commitment?

To keep talking.

Before a vote, that may mean picking up the phone and asking someone who sees an issue differently, “Help me understand why you see it that way.” It may mean finding common ground, improving a bill, or discovering that there's agreement on something they didn't expect.

And sometimes, after having that conversation, they'll still disagree and vote differently.

That's okay.

Stephen Hawking once said:

“Mankind's greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking.”

He went on to say, “All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.”

That's really the heart of Minnesota Forward Together.

The goal isn't to make people vote alike.

It's to make it easier for people who don't always vote alike to work together when they can.

This isn't about uniformity. It's about cooperation without conformity.

And ultimately, you, the voter (not a coalition, not a party and not another candidate) are the people each legislator is accountable to.

Agree where you can. Disagree where you must. But keep talking.
