Forward Independence

Forward Independence Forward Independence is a Minnesota political movement for those done with partisan warfare. Not Left. Not Right. FORWARD! Join us!

We stand for collaboration, accountability, fiscal responsibility, civil discourse, and putting country over party. In 1992, a group of Minnesota citizens established a brand new political party—the Independence Party. These bold, visionary citizens were not part of the political elite, captains of industry, or members of the idle rich looking to fill some time. They were ordinary citizens whose d

isgust with constant budget deficits, big money special interest influence, and extreme ideological dominance forced them to action. They started a political party grounded in core principles of direct service and accountability to the people, whose government can and will budget sensibly and deliver within its means, and whose endorsed candidates and elected representatives serve the people first, first, and first. This party would not be governed by extremists or big (special interest) money, but by moderate, common sense approaches to public policy issues. In July 2025, the then-named Independence-Alliance Party of Minnesota merged with the Forward Party of Minnesota to become Forward Independence.

Jay has a Master’s Degree in Data Analytics and a plan to proactively protect taxpayer dollars from fraud. During COVID, he helped implement a data-driven system for the Army that ensured resources got where they were needed most. Jay says government should use data to prevent waste and fraud before it happens, not after taxpayers have already paid the price.

Could easily put something like this together for the DFL in Minnesota as well.

Minnesota makes it really hard to get on the ballot if you're not a Democrat or Republican.

Steve Patterson was working to give Minnesotans a third option in the Governor's race, but gathering 2,000 signatures in just two weeks proved to be too steep a challenge. In this article, he shares his frustrations with a system designed to protect the two major parties.

Forward Independence-endorsed Minnesota House candidate Michael Hutchinson collected 540 signatures, exceeding the 500 required to get on the ballot. But 53 signatures were rejected because officials said the handwriting wasn't clear enough.

Anyone who has signed a petition on a clipboard while someone is going door-to-door knows handwriting isn't always perfect. Now Hutch wants to appeal those rejected signatures, but doing so will require a costly legal challenge he can't afford.

Whether you agree with these candidates or not, voters deserve options.

Austin businessman Steve Patterson wanted to carve out a more moderate lane. The rules made it impossible.
