If the forecasts verify, this would only be the third time in 154 years of record in the Twin Cities, and in 133 years of record at St. Cloud, that high temperatures reached at least 80 F in each of the first 10 days of June. Other years at both stations were 2023 and 1976.

This is a chance to provide input in the National Weather Service Cooperative Program. This is a group of volunteers who monitor and report rain, snow and temperature each day. The records they keep are the backbone of keeping track of the climate in the country.

Happy Statehood Day. On May 11, 1858, Minnesota became a state. Word did not reach the new state until two weeks later when the news was conveyed via a telegram to Prairie du Chien in Wisconsin and then the news traveled up the Mississippi River by steamboat. What was the weather like 168 years ago on May 11, 1858? There were very few weather recording stations in the state. Fort Snelling weather observations ceased on April 30, 1858, and would not start again until 1867. There were meteorological reports out of Fort Ridgley in Renville County and at Fort Ripley in Morrison County. Both locations reported frost in the morning, no precipitation and a 2 pm temperature of 62 degrees at Fort Ripley and 58 degrees at Fort Ridgely.
